Topic Dog Boards / General / Swallowed cooked chicken leg
- By MariaC [gb] Date 23.10.06 21:35 UTC
We feed our dog raw chicken wings etc but tonight he stole a COOKED chicken leg and before we could do anything he seemed to swallow it whole - he seems to be fine and he is asleep at the moment, this happened a couple of hours ago!

Do we need to keep an eye on him all night or if it was going to be a problem would we already know about it?

Any help would be appreciated!

Maria

Although it is certainly not recommended to feed your dog cooked chicken bones as you know, the chances of it actually doing any harm are slim. If it were my dog I would keep a careful eye on him - especially when he's going to the loo and any concerns at all get him straight to the vet. I suspect he will be absolutely fine though. There are various thoughts about getting him to eat loads of bread etc in the hope of coating the bones but personally I would carry on with his normal feeding regime else you won't know if any differences in his behaviour/motions are down to the chicken bones or not.

I'm sure most of us have had our dogs raid our bins or snatch something that they shouldn't I have :-D  I too feed raw chicken wings, and before I learnt to take all cooked chicken bones out of the indoor dustbin immediately my girl very often would jump up stick her head in or tip the bin over completely to get to those bones, she would run off and wolf them down before I had a chance to realise what she had done  like you I panicked as we all know they can be like splinters, but just to put your mind at rest my girl never had any side effects luckily, nor the cats or fox's who used to raid my black sacks.  Of course now I am wise to them all and make sure everything is in a wheelie bin. ;-)  So unless your dog looks unwell, I think he just got away with an extra forbidden snack, he is proberbly smirking at getting away with it, as my girl did.

Carrington,
I am pleased you have said that as my dogs raid the bins.
Interestingly enough only when there is either bread or chicken carcass in there!!! 99% of the time I take the bin out if there is a chicken carcass in it, but if I dont both of them knock it over and eat what evers in there. Neither of my dogs have had any ill effects but I will say I KEEP A VERY GOOD EYE ON THEM AND AT THE SLIGHTEST SIGN ANYTHING WAS WRONG THEY WOULD BE DOWN THE VETS (and yes that was meat to be in capitals!!!!) I would NOT feed them cooked chicken wings on purpose.
Just keep a VERY good eye on them.
Lea.
