Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Not eaten until we get home

Sometimes as we go out I put down a chewy hide treat but my dog will not eat it until we come back, as soon as we come in he picks up the chew and starts chewing or playing with it. Does anyone elses dog do this?

I have also posted before that he had been taking things of mine (only sometimes) and chewing them.  My toothbrush, purse etc.

The last couple of times I have gone out I haven't allowed him free run of the whole house, when I come back he has been into the cupboard (which is an open cupboard) and taken one of my hats out (not chewed it) but it is just by my front door. I always leave the kitchen television on for him so there is some noise.  But he definitely seems to be getting better, and it seems that the idea of leaving him with not so much house to walk around is better.

My spaniel is terribly greedy and will steal anything he thinks is vaguely tasty from right ubder our noses. This summber i was camping and left all the dogs in the camper and went over to the flyball ring to boxload. I returned about 30 minutes later and remembered that i had left a packet of sausage rolls open on the (very low) side. To my surprise none of my dogs had touched it. YOu can guarentee it would have been gone as quick as lightening had i been there!!

All mine, except the Beardie puppy, will leave treats until we return home then gobble them up when they have said hello.

I've had dogs do the same. My current bunch rush off to grab a mouth full of food as I'm getting them ready to take for a walk!

One of mine does this. Her food could be sitting in her bowl untouched for hours, but as soon as i say walkies she'll rush up and take a couple of mouthfulls,or finish off the lot.

When i arrive home they'll all scuttle off and find a chewy or bone and rush up to me with it in their mouths as iff to offer me their 'gift',and then go off and eat them.

My dogs will eat if I am not there, but they DO do something else similar.
When I have been out a while, and then return, they greet EACH OTHER! Despite the fact that they have been together the whole time.

my parents have got a gsd cross collie who has always done thins wont eat or drink while they are out as soon as you get home mad dash to say hello then a quick drink then settle down with whatever he was left. Also he had a thing about my mums handbags and would take them up to my parents room and leave the bag on the bed for them, a couple of time hes grabed a loaf of bread or the butter of the side in the kitchen and taken them upstairs and left them on my parents bed never eaten or chewed anything just leaves them as what we call a present for my parents on their bed

This is very weird seeing this thread.  If my dog looks as if she thinks she is coming out with me I will give her a treat before I leave and I can see the treat disappearing as I shut the door.  However, my daughter looked after my dog for a few days and had to come home each lunchtime to let Paris out for constitutionals and also give her a dose of medicine.  One morning my daughter was running late and put the morning dose of medicine on a biscuit as instructed and left the house.  To her dismay when she got home at lunchtime there was the biscuit on the floor which was quickly eaten as soon as Paris had calmed down.  How strange that so many dogs do this, I wonder why?

Yep, both of mine have been known to do this too.
