OK - Bramble's bed is starting to fray at the edges and we need two beds anyway so we can leave one at new house. He is arthritic, although still reasonably agile, but only 19kg - so don't think he needs one of these off the floor beds. What I think would suit him is one of these big bean-bag type beds with a washable cover and maybe waterproof underneath :) Any recommendations ???

Phew! What a price I think I would be tempted to make my own.  These people sell cordura at £8 a metre.

Haven't got the time :D Soon new house to renovate, clean, garden plus existing one, plus job, plus 91 year old mother in IOW to visit, plus husband to fuss over, plus CD to sit and waste time at, plus .......... (erm, any other excuses - I know, elderly sewing machine that needs servicing :D :D :D ) Any other slightly cheaper suggestions :D :D

I have big fleece cushions from here.  They have removable zip covers and the interior cushion is waterproof.  I bought one at a show and was so pleased with it that I rang them to ask them to send another :) The covers wash well and they are reasonably priced compared to others that i looked at.

Both my dogs have the fold up bed in a bag things. The dogs love them and they are easy to store, clean and take on holiday etc. Pets At home up here in Scotland were selling them fairly cheaply (£20) for the middle size one which my Gordon Setter fits on nicely. I use a cheap duvet type cushion on top.

i bought one 5 years ago from cozies it been outside in the rain.snow.frost and sunshine,been jet wash down with pet fresh and still look good as new.i have 3 in total

My old girl used to have bladder problems and I was constantly washing the beds.  The cheapest solution I found was to buy a cheap bean bag with an extra cover and put the bean bag inside a bin bag and tape it up before putting the spare cover over the top.  Then when she had wet it was just a case of whipping of the cover, sticking it in the wash and giving the bin bag aquick wipe down.  As she got older I found this especialy good as the bean bag gave her more support and kept her comfortable. 

I use pillows and quilts for my girls beds, really comfy and not ever bitten!

What about a nice orthopaedic bed for his joints, Kudos do lovely ones which are entirely waterproof so no fleas, mites etc and can be hosed down, not cheap though............. but my dogs love theirs.

We got one of those, a bean bag, called a Drop and Flop here, for our ESS and it is still in use for our Lab.  That's going on about 15 years of use then.  I've had to sew up the seams on both the cover and the inner part but other than that it is wearing very well.  I have washed the inner part, the actual bed that contains the styrofoam beads, and put in the dryer on occasion.  Washed it just yesterday as a matter of fact as Jet had a little accident.  I keep the heat on the dryer very low and do find that the styrofoam beads shrink after washing but my pet store sells replacement beads.  I will not use a waterproof inner liner as I am afraid that will lead to condensation and breathability problems.  Only drawback to this product is it is quite hot and neither dog would/will use it in summer.

my dogs beds are the sofas and human beds, with duvets topped with vetbed in their proper beds, and a big thick cushion one with a fleece cover in the bay.

After a few years trying to wash my dog's big padded bed in the bath because it wouldn't fit in the washing machine, and having a nightmare getting it dry, I started looking for a comfy bed with removable covers and refused to pay out what they cost.

So I went to Argos, bought the cheapest single duvet and the cheapest single duvet cover (which is a buy one get one free) and she now has a super comfy completely washable (cover and filling) with spare cover that matches our decor and can be folded to the size we want. 

Even to add a waterproof mat underneath would probably still be cheaper than a specific 'dog' bed.

Thank you all for the recommendations :) Haven't quite decided what to do yet. OH went green at the thought of spending £40+ on a dog bed for a, not very big, dog :D Will have to try reminding him how much we spent on our bed :D :D

I too go down the cheap duvet path - can be folded nicely, covered tastefully to match one's decor ;) - and can go in the washing machine easily too :D :D :D

Yep I got fed up of paying loads of money so I also went to argos and bought a cheap duvet plus cover - looks nice as it matches our room and is big enough for both dogs to curl up on!! Also this is the only bed they have decided not to chew!! Result!!!!!!!

I already have an old duvet which they use in our study :) However, the new bed is to replace the one in the kitchen and I don't feel that a folded duvet would work due to the floor type, position of his bed and the small area it occupies :) OH has ordered a cheap, cushion type bed from Ebay on the basis that it cheap so can be thrown away when past it's sell by date - so waiting to see whether it is a good buy or not :D :D

us too we use duvets, even the back of the car is a duvet brought some waterproof fabric in the market and made a permanent water proof cover, its great since we are at the beach most days!!!!  inside just use duvet covers on them and fold to shape they love them!!

We also have folded duvets which are easy to wash :) The house becomes like a Chinese laundry during this time of year

I ususally just pick up cheap beds at agility shows. I put a old sheet on top of them so they're easier to keep clean.

I bought a HUGE bed for £10 at the notts show back in may. Trouble is I've not seen the same size as cheep since :(
