My family was dismayed and my Mum had tears in her eyes at the sight of Jet (13.5 year old Lab) standing with her back legs all caved in. It was our Thanksgiving dinner and Jet was happy as always to have the whole bunch, and her cousin Laddie, come for a visit. We took the two pooches for a short walk but it was a long exciting day for a dog and by the end Jet's back legs just weren't supporting her very well at all. No apparent pain, just the loss of sensation in her back end. I don't think my family appreciated how bad she is till then.
But then my Mum phoned last night and proceeded to harangue me about how I look after my dog. Mum thinks I should let her rest so she will heal. No, she won't heal, unless she has surgery. Mum said I should not take her for walks. No, the Vet says she needs walks to keep every thing moving, just shorter ones, which we are doing, and no jumping down off things. Next I was told I was not treating my dog right because it was "inconvenient" for me to not take her for walks. That doesn't even make sense but at that point, after a long day with a migraine, I hung up on my Mum. So now I guess I AM a bad daughter as Mum is 88 years old herself and I should know better. Phone call of contrition coming up. Sigh.
