I need some jumpers for my extra small Cavalier for the winter but my OH made me promise nothing silly so can anyone recomend somewhere to buy sensible clothes for her as she is feeling the cold a lot and me and my OH love our winter walks and our male can't get enough of them Cindyloo would prefer to stay in the car or in my jacket but she needs to go for a walk.

You're better off with a coat, shower proof and lined and washable -preferably one of those that covers the chest as well. Jumpers just get soggy and horrible in winter weather so won't be much use for walks other than on dry pavement. I have bought my dog coats at Crufts as the pet shops ones never seem to be as good (they tend to not have the part covering the chest), can't remember the name of the company now...... But I'd definitely say a coat, been using them for my Cavaleirs for many years now and the Papillon has them too when it's cold.

Why would a spaniel (albeit a toy version) need clothes?
- By Cindyloos Mum [gb] Date 03.10.06 21:47 UTC
Because she has a very thin covering of fur she has freckles on her body that can be seen through the fur I have had cavs since i was 5 and in most cases just put a waterproof jacket on when walking in the rain mainly for ease of grooming for me as if they don't get wet it is easier to brush them.  However Cindyloo is a very small skinny spaniel who does not enjoy getting cold I am trying to get her to put wieght on and if she ever does then the need for a jumper may not be as bad but at the moment she is shivering on walks even in the daylight when we walk to the beach at night she wimpers and does not enjoy her walks as much.  She needs to be kept warm hence the need for clothes.

They DO need them JG. I used to think the same, until one winter evening (in 1995 with my first Cavalier) when I was waiting at the bus stop to go to dog training and realised how my dog was absolutely shivering with cold. Also their coats are not water proof so when they get wet (easily done in winter, especially as they are small) they get soaked and even colder.

I forgot to add -the Cavalier's coat is of course different to say Cockers and other Spaniels, as it isn't constantly growing and in need of handstripping or clipping.

the only thing a cav coat is constantly doing is attaching itself to clothes and soft furnishing:rolleyes: but it keeps the hoover well fed

I bought a coat at Crufts from these people. It's practical and worthy of a working dog - your OH won't be embarrassed by it. ;-) We only had one opportunity to use it last year during a heavy snow storm at the training club but he was comfortable for the hour he wore it. (Big, hairy GR, likes lying in snow :-D)

THESE are very good quality and quite weather resistant - we have one for an elderly Cocker who has a thin coat and feels the cold in winter.

Thanks for those links just found a luminous bandana on one I might get for Milo as we walk them at night he runs of and is mainly black we were wondering what to do to up his visibility this could be a good Idea has anyone tried them if we are walking on the path he feels the need to jump on to the beach and go and bark at the iron men  all you see is his white tail in the distance.

I bought a Canac night time collar with blinking lights and luminescent fabric. Haven't seen the bandanas.

Go for a nice weatherproof coat, either something that blends in with your girl's colour (what colour is she?) or just a nice sober dark colour, then your OH won't mind too much hopefully. :-)

She is a blenhiem cav who would look lovely in leopard print:cool: I think what she would like is a papoose and to be carried by me poor thing I keep apologising and telling her she will have to walk

have a look at this one https://www.richypucci.com/detail.asp/sku=dog%20coat%20CO.WND.TT, really practical waterproof wax cotton barber jacket with warm removable fleece lining.

and this one is great for visual safety, lightweight also https://www.richypucci.com/detail.asp/sku=dog%20coat%20SP.PHM.BK

My sister's Cav adamantly refuses to go out in the wet without her coat on, she has 5 very pretty coats , mostly from the US as they do a far better selection.   Betsey, the Pug, now has 2 coats in her wardrobe too she just needs to grow into them!
