I was wondering if anyone knew the legal stance on this.  At my work you get your days holidays (20-25 days depending on your level and how long you've been at the company), plus an additional two days that the Board can decide when you take, or, if they don't make any demands in a year you can take them when you want.  As I work in Scotland we are always made to take the 2nd January as one of our bonus days as it is a Scottish holiday that the English offices don't get.

For 2007 we've been told that the bonus days have to be used on 24th and 31st December and that the Scottish office have to use a day from their annual leave entitlement on the 2nd January.

Surely the can't legally tell us that we have to use our annual leave on a certain day?  But, then again, is it worth stirring something up and being made to look like I'm being difficult?

I don't know what the law is but our office closes between Christmas and New Year and those days come out of our personal leave. Only the 25th, 26th and 1st are company holidays.

Both company's I have worked for give an additional number of days for Xmas/New Year leave as they close during that period.  Although my husbands office do allow people to work if they want!

I'm fairly sure that they can tell you when to take your leave.  The law says that you have to have a minimum of 20 days per year but I think that's as far as it goes

Its quite traditional in the legal world, to have to keep some of your holiday entitlement to cover christmas closure.

nfortunately this can be done, they've given us the same dates last year at the hospital where I work!

We have to use three days of our holiday entitlement to cover the days between Christmas and the New Year :(

Yeah, we have to keep three days if we want off then too.

Oh well, guess I'll just have to take it on the chin.

:D :D :D LOL at you all not wanting to take your leave at xmas!!
I have worked 12 day stretches over Xmas, including Xmas day itself and Boxing day, for several years running. I have worked 15 Xmas days out of the 20 during my career.........I'd LURVE to be forced to take my leave at Xmas!!!!! :D :D :D

My gripe is that I'd be quite happy to work at Xmas - I don't like being forced to take my holiday then :)

Must admit though - I've often "volunteered" to work one of the three days between Christmas & New Year ....empty trains, empty offices, no telephones ringing - you can get an awful lot of "rubbish" work done with no interruptions .....and can still swan off home early :D

Definitely - last company I worked at didn't shut at Xmas/New Year and I was quite happy to work and - as you say - clear up all the bits that get pushed to one side normally :) OH always worked at Xmas/New Year (he was a director of the company) and covered the phones so his staff could take time off :D
