Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / what age for new puppy
- By Dogz Date 29.09.06 15:47 UTC
What is best for getting a new puppy, we are hoping to get a bitch same breed as we currently have, as a companion for him.
Jack is almost 11months now and we know that we may have to wait many months for another.
I do want a bitch this time, much as I love our boy.
I also know I will have issues to address as I DO NOT want puppies.
Any advise gratefully recieved

I would wait until he is AT LEAST 18months before thinking about it. A bit longer would be even better. That way he will have gone through the adolescent phase before getting a puppy that will need all your attention. :)

 Thanks for that, perhaps if we wait til 18 months then before even asking/ looking. He is very demanding still and we wondered if he was in need of a companion....The theory I have is a bitch could come along and eventually show him the way! I may well be wrong it has been known on more than one occasion.

Don't forget that puppies can encourage young, adult dogs to behave like puppies :D So make sure that he is as well trained/behaved as possible before getting a puppy :)
