I noticed today that my 18 month old Akita bitch cocked her leg a few times when we were out walking, She did her usual wee's, then the odd time would wee like a boy dog???  I havent noticed it before and wondered if any one knew what this means. She had her first season at 6 months old - then she was spayed when she was about 10 months old. Does she think she is in season or something??????? This is my first dog, always had cats before, so if this is the norm please excuse my ignorance.

My terrier bitch often does funny triangular wees like leg cocking.  I think she does it just to show the boys she can. :-D

One of my bitches (now 8 years old) has always done this. Not all the time, and usually in her own surroundings. I think it's just territorial marking. She is obviously trying to out-pee her son

My mother's terrier x always cocks her leg :-D  Some bitches just do.

I had a Manchester Terrier who always peed like this, even to the extent sometimes of balancing on both front legs & getting her back legs both as high as she could while she did it! She looked quite funny, I always thought it was like a male marking territory. I have a little terrier now who does it on 3, not sure if she does it because she has damage to one of her hips & it's just more comfortable in that position.

This is the sign of a dominant/confident individual who likes to advertise they are here.  My now oldest has doen it ever since she had her first litter and waits to do it over anyone elses.

I don't think that is always the case, Brainless, my Dandie used to do it, despite it being quite a feat for her short little legs :D.  She was ever so 'umble. :)  She would also pee over my Cocker's pee.  My Cocker, by contrast, is definately a "boss" dog and has never done it.
Rereading through the thread, I wonder if it is a bit of a terrier trait?

Certainly in my breed and larger ones I know it has always been the dominant alpha girls that do it, the others are far too lady like and curtsy ever so low.

The dominent marking idea does makes sense.  As I say, I wonder if terriers just have a quirk for it regardless of individual character.

Well they do seem to be a law unto themselves in the canine scheme of things.

Would not describe my terrier as dominant/confident so I would go for it being a quirky terrier thing.  Law unto herself at times, yes.

Must be my Akita is getting to that confident stage then, I have been expecting some changes around now (18 months) - 2 years and they are a confident breed - just mine hasn't shown any signs yet, bless her...

I thought it was something to do with phantom seasons??? and might lead to a phantom pregnancy :-)  (Not that I know anything about these either). Reassuring to know others do the same anyway. Thanks.

I also have a terrier x who cocks her leg. She is a very timid little thing, so I don't go with the 'confidence' theory, not for her anyway. :-)

My 13month old GR boy squats like a girl - he is very pretty though :D

My border terrier boy often squats too - thinking of putting a pink bow in his hair !

My Weimaraner bitch also does this and is definately the Alpha bitch.  The other 3 bitches just squat.  Freya tends to do it out on walks, so does seem to be territory marking.

My friends collie x sometimes stands on only 2 legs, front paw up too.

My saluki x girl will cock her leg as well, shes also MORE interested in other dogs wee than the boys are, and has to wee over other dogs scent.

She IS teh dominant dog in my house, shes also the oldest.

Have seen a friends very dominant collie bitch do it too, and she will also do handstands so she can wee higher up!
