Topic Other Boards / Foo / Glucose Intolerance/Gestational Diabetes test?
- By Carla Date 27.09.06 12:40 UTC
Hi - has anyone on here had this test done?

I had it this morning, and apart from it being VILE, I feel rough as heck now.

I just have a couple of questions if anyone else has had it done?

Thanks

Have you already had the results?  Were they out of the ordinary.  It's only glucose they make you drink isn't it?  I don't think you should be feeling bad, maybe you should give them a ring.  Have you had something proper to eat now?

I had it done - I had one blood test taken, had to drink 2 large cups of lucosade in 5 mins then sit and wait 2 bleeding hours (yawn) before having another test taken...the results came back fine thank goodness.  I did not feel unwell and although I don't mind lucosade it was tricky to drink so much in such a short space of time, I felt fine through it all?  Another lady there said when she had the test with her first born she nearly fainted as they took so much blood, followed by the nasty sugar drink but this time she was fine?

Well, I had it done this morning. Had to fast from 9pm last night and had the first test at 9.15am. Full blood test - not finger prick - and the midwife couldn't get a vein so kept pushing the needle around under the skin to find a vein and it made me go a bit woozy... So then she took a sample the other side, I had to drink this hideous glucose drink and as soon as I drank it I started to feel dizzy and sick and lightheaded. This lasted about half hour and the midwife said that could be an indication of either GD or full blown Diabetes. She took another blood test half hour into it, then another one 2 hours after the very first - all out the same vein in the other arm. I was OK 45 mins after the drink.

I wondered if anyone else had felt lightheaded after the drink and if so were you still clear?

I have a funny feeling I might have this - which is OK, I can manage if I do - but I want to know and I will have to wait a few days for the results and then for another consultants appt before I do...

Hi Chloe...I am an 'ordinary' diabetic lol and have to have fasting glucose test every six months...it's not unusual to to feel this way either through HYPER or HYPO effets of blood sugar levels! If you feel fine now though it probably was the fasting that did it...if you don't feel fine now I would suggest phoning the midwife for advice. Lots of people struggle with the effects of low blood sugar and excess alcohol the night before makes it worse, they're the ones that tend to faint on the way to work next morning lol !!! My daughter has had gestational diabetes with her last 2 preganancies but is fine otherwise...no effects or problems post delivery and everything back to normal. Even if people are diagnosed with diabetes these days it's not the end of the World, millions of people, like me, live with it all their lives. All the best, Dawn x (though I have to say it's usualy fasting from Midnight??)

Hiya - thanks for the message. I also thought it was normal to fast from midnight but apparently not in our hospital - typical!

I feel OK now, a bit shaky but then I do feel like that if I don't eat when I'm pregnant. I do get a sugar rush if I don't eat for hours and then eat a bar of chocolate or something sweet - so I tend not to do that - and thats a bit how I feel now. Like I've had a sugar overload day. Is that normal after such a vile VILE sugary drink? There was loads of it too - I could be sick thinking about it :(
- By newfiedreams Date 27.09.06 15:07 UTC
Ohhh poor Chloe!  Yes it is normal and I do the same, rather stupidly...yesterday I went out and forgot to have lunch, then I got home and felt hypo as I'd had my drugs! Then I had to eat and felt even worse lol My own stooopid fault! Try to eat carbohydrates, like a bowl of weetabix or shredded wheat or porridge(WITHOUT SUGAR! lol), this will help 'mop' up the excess sugar. I feel quite strongly about the lack of advice AFTER the tests..i.e the best things to eat, how you might feel physically etc Ahhh well, the World 'aint perfect! BUT if you still feel unwell later tonite or tomorrow ring the midwife ok?? Always better to be safe than sorry! All the best, Dawn X

Thanks :) Thats a good point, I was just sort of sent home with no further advice!

So is this normal for someone without GD or Diabetes? I honestly don't mind if I have it, but I need to know now because once I know something I can start to learn and get on with it :D
- By newfiedreams Date 27.09.06 15:19 UTC
Chloe I don't know and can't possibly guess whether you have GD or D! :D But it is NORMAL to feel like that even if you haven't got GD or D! Sometimes being starved makes us light headed and then the sugar rush effect after loading with glucose...but please try not to worry too much in any event...PLEASE!!!
- By Carla Date 27.09.06 15:52 UTC
Thanks. Thats what I needed to know. No-one seemed to be able to tell me what was normal or not!
- By newfiedreams Date 27.09.06 15:55 UTC
AHA!!! BUT that doesn't mean you haven't got it either!! LOL I don't want to confuse you or misguide you Chloe...which is why I want to sit on the fence!!  But in essence, YES you can feel like this after the test if you don't have it! LOL  :P

I had gestational diabetes - as much as I didnt like the test I did get over it quickly.  I then had to go to diabetes clinic every other week but the real pain in the *** was that I had to go to the hospital 3 times a week towards the end to monitor the baby and get a consistent heart beat!  I had to be very careful about the amounts I ate and the times so there werent heavy fluctuations in sugar levels.  When I did give birth my son was taken into the special care unit for 24 hours because he was 'diabetic' but only until he had worked through his food from the womb as it were.  I think about three months after the baby was born I had to go and be retested to ensure I was no longer testing positive for diabetes.

I had sugar come through with three out of four of my pregnancies, my first born went to the scbu in the hospital till they stabilised her sugar levels. she was 9lb 1oz the biggest baby in there.  I remember getting the tests before my son was born and it made me feel real ill.  I was negative and just watched my diet but he was 9lb 4oz.  I was totally clear after the births.  My husband is a diabetic and has been for 20 odd years, he is well balanced and just gets on with life.  We are just waiting for the cure.  We also hope non of the kids get it either.

Thanks everyone.

My last baby was 10lb 8 which is what has triggered the test this time. They tested his sugar levels several times after birth but all was normal - I would have thought any problems would have shown up then, but apparently not necessarily. My previous 2 were also 9lb 3 and 9lb 8. Never shown any diabetes symptoms either.

I've been insulin dependant diabetic now for 35 years, and so far so good, still don't need glasses, still have all my fingers and toes intact.

During each of my 4 pregnancies I ended up having 5 injections per day, 3 hospital visits per week, thankfully all our children are ok, our girls are now 17, 15, & 13 and our son is 11, apparently boys are more likely to get it than girls if one of their parents are diabetic.

My diabetes wasn't inherited, nobody in our family has it, but the doctors think it was because as a child I had jaundice and mumps at the same time which triggered it off.

I don't class diabetes as an illness, just a way of life.

Even though my blood sugars were running at levels of a non-diabetic person during pregnancy, by babies were still pretty big!
