we are a bit worried about our 2 year old weimy. she hasnt been herself since monday. she had an upset tum on mon, then perked up tues then was sick yesterday. but the most worrying thing is she wont stop drinking. she is drinking so much more than normal, we are having to refill her (huge) bowl during the day and last night she woke up 3 times and was frantic to get to her bowl. we have been having loads of toads and frogs in our garden and we wondered to begin with if she had licked a toad and it had made her poorly but not sure now. she is still eating fine and still very lively when visitors come!! im am going to take her to the vets if she is still drinking loads tomorrow, but just wondered if anyone had any advice before then?

Personally I'd take her to the vet NOW. Drinking such as you describe is a symptom of many possible conditions, some of them serious, where prompt treatment could be vital.

I'd get her to the vets sooner rather than later.  There are loads of medical reasons why she might be drinking excessively.  One of the worst would be a pyometra (assuming she's not spayed) - drinking alot is one of the major symptoms in the early stages.  It'll probably be nothing but it's best to get her checked out.

well the vets said it may be pyometra, they are going to operate tomorrow to find out. they did say it may be just something she has eaten but they dont want to take the risk, so she is booked in first thing tomorrow morning. thanks for your excellent advice!

Sorry to hear that but the symptoms are characteristic of pyometra.  Hope your girls better soon.

well she is home from the vets now. she had various tests done before they were going to operate and it showed a problem with her kidneys. they decided not to operate and to do further tests. so she is home and on antibiotics for now and we get the results tomorrow and monday. they said it still could be pyometra but are treating the kidneys first. she is very sleepy but pleased to be home!!

No doubt they will be testing for diabetes amongst other conditions which can cause excessive thirst.

Let us know how you get on.

the vet called this morning and we had to go back to double check some bloods. she has hypercalcaemia which is basically very high calcium levels. it is caused by either an overactive gland in her neck or cancer. we have an appointment with a specialist monday and go from there. she is only 2 bless her so fingers crossed whatever it is she will fight it. i can't believe that just excess thirst has led to something so serious. :-(

Everything crossed for Monday.
