my friends bitch is on day 60 of her pregnancy, just wondering what she should be looking for.  this morning she went downstairs at 8am and there was a clear mucus pile a bit larger than a 50 pence piece, she phoned me thinking she was in labour so i went over there, as i am hoping to learn abit about pregnancy and birth before i breed my own bitch.  i have been there since 9am this morning and she has been panting most of the day, then sleeping then waking up and trying to tear up newspaper and then falling asleep again.  we have the book of the bitch which is a great help, but could anyone let me know that this is fine for the amount of hours she has been doing it for? and what should we look for in the next stage.  she has been outside for a wee, but she has diahorria.

many thanks

angela.

There could easily be another 48 hours of this! Take it in turns to sleep beside her bed. :)

As the book of the bitch says, the digging and panting is often termed as stage one, the deep sleeping is the pups on the travel classed as stage 2, a little shaken often happens just after this although not always. It can take 48 hours from the real rapid digging till pups appear.

As previously discussed on other threads ( may be worth a search)  the temperature drop is often a good indicator of labour starting if taken several days before and charted properly.  It has been the best method for me. My bitch had puppies Wednesday night and again the temp drop was indicative of a soon to be litter, they arrived 12-14 hours after the drop.
