I am after peoples opinions :)

The reason why I am asking this is that a local vet has been saying to various people that KC can only be contracted by nose to nose contact and also they must keep up regular and normal excercise to aid a quick recovery

I know that it is an airbourne virus and have always though confinement to home when the cough is very bad and restricted excercise away from other dogs when they are over the worst is the way to manage a dog who has KC ?

What do you think ?

????

I've always been told to keep dog confined to garden
as a) risk of spreading the infection to other dogs
b) dogs with KC shouldn't be exercised as it can aggrievate the condition,
they should be kept as quiet as possible and warm.

Surely it would be the same with a human cold - spread by coughing, sneezing etc?

New one on me! I'd rather stick the method above if confronted with KC.

I am with you on this one :)

I am very tempted to get in touch with the vets concerned as I think what they are suggesting is so irresponsible

My vet told me (few years ago) to continue with exercise once the cough had STOPPED, but be aware they would be contagious for 3 weeks, so not let any other dogs walk up to them.

How irresponsible of the vet. I take it he/she was quite young? I bet he failed THAT question in the exam ;)

I'd get in touch with the vet concerned and give him/her a piece of my mind  My dogs are now fully recovered (thankfully) from contacting KC at Blackpool Ch show. We only walked past (about 3') from a dog that might have coughed and ended up with 3 very sick dogs :( Mine were kept in until they had stopped coughing, and were then only taken on short walks for a couple of weeks. Drove me mad. :D They couldn't understand why we had to turn back too soon :)

I have e-mailed one of the vets at the Practice so will wait to hear back from him :)

I was thinking of this thread earlier when a man walking two toy dogs came over to see our standard - they were sweet little dogs, and as usual Sophie stood still, as she's a bit unsure of dogs she's never met before, and took a step back as one jumped up to her  - and one of the toys was coughing!
Hope it was nothing contagious like kennel cough.

How long does it take to show the symptoms ?

I've always been told that the exercising of elderly and young dogs is dangerous if they have KC and can result in their deaths!!  Have things changed?
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 18.08.06 17:55 UTC
It usually takes up to 10 days for KC symptoms to show. Mine started after 5 days, so just keep a close ear out ;)

Will do - thanks :)
