my catrated make boxer is 12 months old.
he recently was seen by our vet for a routeen check up , where the vet said he was in fabolus condition, not too fat or thin just right. you can just feel his ribs, he is covered in hard muscle and his coat is glossy and skin is healthy.

he has 2 feeds a day, of complete and tinned. he also gets occasionally some fresh raw fish, raw chicken, livers, hearts depending on what the butcher has in.

he was not in the best condition when i had hm and was loose in his bowels. now his movements are firm and a good colour that crumble when you crush them.

we cover up to 4 miles a day with a break between each mile of about a hour/1 hour and a half.

he dosnt chew, he dosnt bark and is very laid back and happy at home.

however he is always hungry!

he is tottaly obsessd with food,

he will polish off his food and then just want more. i had upped it a bit , but it makes no diffrence. sometimes he dosnt even finish his feed but he still loosk round the house for food. at every opertunity he will be up on the counters looking, he has kllearnt to open the fridge and food cuboards all ahve to be locked. and out on walks, if he hears a food packet his attenion is gone.

he never seems to be satisfied with what he has, he always seems to want more.

we never feed him from the table and in fact we put him out of the room when we are eating meals.

are some dogs just obsessed with food?

my other dogs used to eat there feed and then be full. but not this chap.

His behaviour around food seems perfectly normal. :) With some breeds (labradors are a case in point!) the owners say that when they don't want food it's a sign they've been dead for two weeks!

When I was a child we had a dog who'd stuff down as much food as he could, go outside and bring it back, then return to his bowl for more. Food is usually of highest importance to dogs. :)

Yes some dogs are constantly hungry, but i would only accept this 'diagnosis' after ruling out other things. Wolfwoman what commercial food are you feeding him? When was he last wormed?

If a full work up has been obtained via the vets i'd be inclined to say hes just an out and out greedy guts :D :D

We have a regular counter sufer shes so good she went professional in 2005 :D yet the other two same diet don't bother.

I'm sure your boy is one of those dogs that would defenitely be able to fend for themselves, if necessary ;-) The everlasting project of finding something to eat will occupie them forever :-)
Just a thought, though. Dogs can have troubles with gastritis, just like we humans do, which might give a feeling of constant hunger. Could be a possibility to ask your vet for something to neutralize the acids in his stomach, just to make sure he's not suffering from gastritis. If you try him on a light medication, and he shows a change in behaviour when it comes to his food, you'd know. If not, no harm done.
Always nicer with a dog with a good apetite. Much worse to try and coax a dog to eat :-(
Best wishes,
Karen

All my gundogs have been perpetually hungry and would eat until they burst.

It is nature's way, they never know when the next meal may come from.

Better than having a dog that is fussy, picky or does not eat for days.......... (never had one of those).

Mine are fit as a fiddle and compete so their constant craving for food does not indicate a health problem to me, just greed! :D

The key to his obsession is in your sentence, he was not in the best condition when we got him, I've found that dogs which are hungry as puppies or youngsters do become food obsessed. When I'm rearing puppies, I always try to make sure don't know what it's like to be really hungry.None of my dogs are food obsessed. When I put their food bowls down, they eat in a calm, leisurely manner. Granted, they never say no to a treat, but they don't constantly look for food and will leave food in their bowls if they have had enough.
They are Labradors.

ROFLMAO, nothing like any lab I have ever met!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dogs have always known what it is like to be hungry and always will, just like me! ;)

That struck a chord. Somebody once asked me why I don't have a chocolate lab. My husband said, "she'd eat it".

I wouldnt worry about him being hungry as long as hes wormed and not loosing weight :)
my basset hound eats for england, she has 2/3 big bowls full of butches complete and tinned meat & after gullping down that lot shes still hungry & will try to steal food if you dont keep an eye on her :)
shes regualy wormed and is a good weight, not to thin not to fat. but if i dont watch wat she eats shes gunna end up quite tubby. some breeds are just greedy :)
better a greedy dog than a picky dog :)
