I wprk at a school for pupils with special needs. Yesterday I attended the funeral of a pupil who died during the first week of the summer holidays. Our school caters for pupils aged 2-19, he had attended since he was 3 and had left us this summer aged 19. Listening to the speeches at his funeral made me realise that despite all of his disabilities he had led a full and happy life, he was known for always having a smile on his face and I felt priveleged to have known him. It made me think about the little things that I have been complaining about recently and how small they seem compared to the hurdles that he had to face yet he still managed to smile. When things like this happen it makes you take stock and I am thankful that I have 2 healthy daughters and I realise that I have little to complain about, and from now on I intend to count my blessings. My thoughts are with his family.

I work with a number of children who are in local authority care and they too make me realise that I have a lot to be thankful for.

A sad time for all those people who have benefitted from knowing this young man.

I totally agree with you!

My best friend is severely disabled with many disabilites.  She has worked all her working life, always there for a laugh and never shows a down side.  Her lazy cousin used to live next door to me, never did a day's proper work and well need I say more.

There are some very special people in this world who make you sit up and realise how lucky you are!

I agree - I spent some time working with disabled  children and adults (with the adults it was a head injury unit, many of them had had motorcycle accidents) and not a day went by that I didn't silently thank the powers that be for my life :)

I work as a residential care worker and every day can be humbling to me too.
