what are the thoughts on inbreeding. ie daughter with father.  both have fantastic tempraments.. gene pool is very small. health testing is not done by many others.who use their dog for stud. however both these are health tested. boy hasnt been used on all the world and their wife. trying to maintain health of breed.

If it's DDB's their gene pool isn't that small over here and there are quite a few health tested dogs with good scores just on this site.  Actually there are a lot of DDB's advertised on here.

The problem is, that in some ways, the breed is still in it's infancy so you may not know yet what faults could be in these lines and doing such a close mating could bring them out.

The closest I've done is a grandfather/grand-daughter mating, I wouldn't want to go any closer than that and our breed has a much smaller gene pool than the DDB.

no it is not a ddb. however with regards to that breed there are not that many who have had all the neccesary health tests.  what are your thoughts in general on daughter to father mating

Why do you want to use this particular dog?   To my mind, there would have to be very good reasons to breed so close.  Also, if I were to do this mating, I would need to know a great deal about the dog's ancestors.

It might also be worth bearing in mind that a lot of puppy buyers could be very wary of such a mating, having been worried about "in- breeding" in pedigree dogs.

i was just asking for thoughts on this topic. as inbreeding is not covered well on the internet.  the more knowledge you have the better you should be at making decisions. in this time of puppy farming and the rest i just wanted to be more knowledgable.

Hi Jayne

I completely agree with you that the more knowledge you have, the better you should be at making decisions.  I also think that in-breeding should only be carried out by those who know the histories of the dogs in question - the virtues and the faults.  I have mated a bitch to her half-uncle (her father was his grandfather) and had a lovely typey litter.  I wouldn't be so keen to breed quite so close as father to daughter, I don't think.

I will be interested to read other people's opinions ...

That is a mating I have done twice.  My Jozi's Dad Sire is grandad to her Mum.  Her Mum is also bred like that (on a different ancestor), in other words on both occasions I mated a bitch to the half brother of her Mother.

Te cl0sest I have gone is half brother to sister.

Father to daughter breeding and other close in-breeding has been used many times to make or keep a good line there is nothing wrong in doing this to create the best of the best, however in this day and age unless it is a breed in it's real infancy there is not much need for breeding so close. I don't know your breed, but would not think it a necessity to do this and I would think there are other viable studs around, you have to know what you are doing with in-breeding it can cause just as many problems as solve and fresh blood into the line is usually a much better idea. But if it was a necessity, there is nothing wrong in breeding so close.
