Topic Other Boards / Foo / Moving to cornwall next year need advice
- By sonny [gb] Date 07.08.06 15:42 UTC
I will be moving to cornwall hopefully next year if all goes to plan and need a little advice on which areas to look at. My work will be based in truro as i can transfer so that bit is sorted not far from train station so could commute that way?  But i also want to live near the beach or a short car journey so not too far to go for a walk with the dogs on the beach. Also needs to have plenty of walks nearby like feilds/woodlands etc...  but also not too far from work. So if any local people know of areas which might fit the bill please can you help me.
On another note dog training classes would be a must. I go twice per week at the moment mainly for socialization of dogs and me & hubbie so would like to continue also would help make new friends as well. Also will be starting a family so i will need to consider schools. I know its alot to ask but i have been browsing this site for a long time and have solved many problems through the search facility and reading other posts but this one eludes me. We are going for a weekend break in september to have a look at areas we might like to live in so any suggestions will be most welcome

Thanks

Sonya

If you want to be near a beach, Cornwall's the place. Nowhere's far from the coast!

Best thing to do is get a map and see where the railway lines run, pick a village near the line or statoin and have a look on www.upmystreet.co.uk to get an idea of what the area is like.

Truro is central so you can go North coast, Newquay is the big town there, not well regarded by any one living in Cornwall, South coast, Falmouth there, got all thew amenities but a a bit expensive. Then you could have a look on down round Redruth way, some nice villages out side Redruth and quite a bit cheaper.

There are beaches with in easy driving distance where ever you are in Cornwall, but the down side of this is we have the highest water bills in the UK, all those miles of beaches have to be maintained for the benefit of the tourists who flock here in the summer.

Many beaches are also closed to dogs form Easter to October, again for the benefit of the tourists.

Hi I live in Cornwall and go to dog training etc.  I started off in Par near Fowey - Train station 20 mins to Truro, dog friendly beach open all year on your door step.

I now live in Fowey which is a little further from the train but can be reached by short bus journey then train.  There are some lovely places around Par like Tywardreath (featured on that green living programme recently).  Why don't you do the B&B trail first and have a look around.

By the way we are having our Beardie fun day at Goonavern in Sept so you could really get to know the place.

hi

i used to live in Cornwall in a village called Connor Downs which is near Hayle.  Hayle is right on the coast and is approx 15 miles from Truro.  It apparently boasts 3 miles of golden sands!  And it has a train station.  Another place could be Falmouth or Penzance which also have stations.  There are also loads of really nice villages around and brillant beaches  (Gwithian Towans for one).

PM me if you would like more info as my OH originates from cornwall and had never ventured from the county till he met me (7 years ago - hes 34!!!!:eek::eek:)  :P, so he knows all that you need to know  :D :D

Hayle is lovely, my dad has friends there and i spent many happy summers frazzling myself on the beach at Hayle (and various other bits of cornwall).

Hi,

We live in Cornwall, about 20 mins from Truro and 5 mins from beach. Just outside Truro is a large wood (at Idless) where you can walk your dogs all year. As for train stations, theres Camborne,Redruth,St Austell and further down Penzance, St Erth. But please remember, public transport here is LIMITED:rolleyes:

As someone else said, you are never far from a beach down here, but most do have dog restrictions from Easter Day until 1st Oct. There are dog friendly ones though.

NO area around here is cheap for houses though:rolleyes: and the nearer to Truro you are the more expensive they get! ;-)

You can PM me if you want anymore info, i have lived in this area all my life (23 years!) so i am quite familiar!!

PS i also have children so i know the different nurserys/schools if you want that sort of info as well.

Thanks for all your help so far,  we are considering St Austell and surrounding areas to begin with, are there any particular areas to avoid and what about house prices are there any areas cheaper than others?
