Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dog has eaten cooked chicken bones

Just stood talking to neighbour at front.  Dog lapping up attention from children and while my back was turned she's picked up a whole chicken carcass from another neighbour's rubbish and ran off with it.  By the time I managed to catch up with her she'd scoffed the lot.  Very worried now, is there anything I can do or do I just have to wait and see?

Oh blimey :(

I would give your vet a quick ring and see what they suggest. I would say close observation will be needed.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed she will be ok

One of mine had a whole cooked chicken once, off the worktop

Worrying time, but he never suffered any ill effects.

Looks like a trip the pub is off now!  Vet said to monitor her and to ring if she starts vomiting or starts diarrhoea or if she looks in discomfort.  She is just looking guilty at the moment after being shouted at (she looked pretty pleased with herself before that).  Problem is that she has already had diarrhoea and I've starved her for 24 hours which is why she is so hungry in the first place.  Hope she'll be ok

OH's parents have been feeding cooked chicken carcasses to their dogs for years and never had a problem so hopefully you will be as lucky. We tell them frequently that cooked bones are dangerous but I fear it will take an emergency trip to the vet to convince them

I think it is best not advised because it can lead to problems but it is by no means definate that it will.  So fingers crossed and hope for the best :)  I think they advise giving bread when they have eaten something sharp but with the existing tummy upset perhaps best not to mess with that just keep a close eye on her I suppose.  Even if she is a bit squitty I think you have only got a problem if you see any blood in it or she seems in pain, particularly when passing anything, then I would whip her off to vet pronto.

Mine have eaten cooked chicken bones, not out of my choice I add. But they were fine.

Well, she threw up so it was a trip to the vet to be checked.  Vet examined her and thought the stomach was empty.  Hopefully she brought it all back and that is the end of it. Tch, dogs
