Topic Dog Boards / Health / Are Caterpillars poisonous ??
- By LJS Date 03.08.06 14:07 UTC
Just been and had a look outside to see if my washing was dry and noticed where the girls secure area is via the dog flap is covered in caterpillars that are munching away on some Nasturtium plants I have in a big planter.

There and hundreds of the things

I know that they can cause rashes if I remember but wondered if they would harm the girls if they decided to have a snack.

I think they will be the Cabbage White, Lucy.  They are are strong memory of my childhood suddenly appearing as they do and being collected in jars, what happened to them next I can't remember  but I don't recall every having any ill effects handling them.

The can't be poisonous really can they, we must have all eaten a few on our cabbages over the years, well before supermarkets anyway ;)

They are 'orrible things

I am not sure if they girls would snack on them but they are Labradors and anything that moves is fair game :D

Mine too, I used to hope they would turn into a butterflis overnight in the jars, but they used to be dead on inspeciton the next day!

:( I was hoping my mother let them go when I lost interest :)

I don't think they are poisonous. My first ex husband (I have 2 :D ) made some soup with broccoli, but hadn't cleaned it right. The soup was swimming with caterpillars, apparently  No-one was ill, but then not everyone ate the soup after the first caterpillars were found ;)

generally if the caterpillars have hairs or are brightly coloured they are poisonous, how much this would affect a human or dog I'm not sure - but if they're bald and green/brown/boring coloured then they're highly likely to be fine.
