Check out using a company like Telediscount - currently 1p per minute! You don't have to pre register, just dial the access number they show and then, when prompted, the number you want to phone and the charges come through on your normal phone bill. Access number/rates do change so check each time before ringing.
Looks like around 15p per minute with BT.

If you have their international calling option then it's 3p a minute to the US. The option is £1 a month. At least these are the prices for the together plan.

Lots of newsagents and convenience stores sell phonecards which you can use from your landline to call the USA for 2p a minute. BT is extortionate.

I have never had the need to call before so guess I dont have any international set up so it would just be normal rate. 3p a minute doesnt sound too bad or even 15 as i would not be on for long
Doesn't 1p per minute sound better though? I always find these quick phone calls have a habit of becoming long ones! :D
I use companies like Telediscount to call my sister in Greece and I think they are really good. Nice to have a good long natter without worrying about the cost. :)

I don't think BT is that bad, I phoned & spoke to my dad in Australia for 95 minutes one day and it was just under £8 when the bill came in.

If you're with talk talk and have their international caller then calls to the USA are free for up to an hour - the you simply hang up and ring again... it's still free.
