Well a year ago I broke my right wrist (I'm right handed).  Usual in plaster etc. all healed (so they told me anyway!)

My problem is it hurts - esp. in damp/cold weather and today it is really bugging me - going up my arm to my elbow.  Doesn't help that I use the pc for my work and the mouse also.  Everyone said it would always give me trouble and they were right!  It crunches if I rotate it (sorry for the graphic info).  And I was hoping someone would have some wonderful tips - would a wrist support help - what about those copper bracelet things!  Not using it isn't really an option much as I would like to do nothing all day!!  Is it really true that it will always ache in the damp/cold?

I don't know why but today it's worse than ever!

Sorry to be a whingebag - think I'm tired too! and maybe a bit of PMT!

Thanks for any tips/help,

Hi rachelsetters,
I broke my right wrist a few years ago and I find that it feels as though it gets locked, or stuck and have to move my wrist until it clicks.
Have you tried running warm water over the area as this will increase the blood flow to the area as it could be to do with poor circulation in cold weather.
Also have you got a mouse mat with a spongy wrist support on it, I think that would help.
If it bugs you really badly though visit your GP and see what he/she suggests.
Good luck in finding a solution.

I've always had weak wrists. The doctor told me to learn to type, as it would strengthen the wrists. Yeh, right. Never did. Anyway, I get problems on a regular basis. I usually just put a crepe bandage on for the day, making sure it goes over the hand, then the wrist, almost to the elbow immobilising the whole wrist. Take it off a few times during the day and exercise the wrist gently by rotating it. Taking pain killers (eg paracetamol) helps ease the pain. If it doesn't get any better you may need to go back to the doctor, just in case there is something else wrong. :(

I never broke mine but I sprained it and it still gives me trouble to this day. It clicks alot and sometimes locks up and aching I hear ya on that one :( Must be arthritis setting in.... Do you have one of those jel things made for your wrist while using the mouse? Not sure how they would work, we use a binder instead of a mouse pad lol :D Personally I don't think the pain will ever go away, another one of those aches and pains to go with life :(

I've never done any damage to my wrist that I know of, but I get horrible aches and pains in my right wrist. I think it's due to using the computer mouse, as it tends to be worst when I have been doing a lot of computer drawing. The pain is mainly at the base of my hand/wrist and running up to my little finger, but sometimes my arm hurts too.
I did get a graphic tablet so I could draw onto the computer using a pen but it was useless so I've gone back to using the mouse. I just have to take breaks regularly.

I have arthritis in my wrists which often ache especially when typing.

The hospital gave me a wrist splint which has a hard splint in the centre that goes along the wrist and the inside of the hand with velcro strapping.  I have found it to be great at relieving the pain when it gets bad.  Perhaps you could have a word with your GP to see if you could get one.

Thanks very much all - I think I need to get a keyboard rest and mousepad that has some support too.  I did wonder if a support would help - maybe it is now arthritic (sp!?)

but maybe it needs some physio?  Am planning to go to drs Friday anyway so may mention it - will mention the splint and see if she thinks it will help.  It's just got me down yesterday - I'm one for never taking tablets either but have to realise sometimes that they may help relieve the pain!

It's not too bad today but does hurt still!

Thanks very much for all the advice gals!

I am a physio! It sounds like you may have a touch of arthritis in it. I think its worth having it examined by a physio..they will be able to advise you on any activity splints or strapping that may help. I have heard that copper bracelets work well, and I also have seen good results with glucosamine tablets from the supermarket/health shop.

Hello pinklillies,

Thanks for replying - is this common after a break - seems to be - as soon as I broke it everyone said it would always hurt in the damp/cold - and it does!!

I will talk to the dr to see if she can refer me to a physio and go from there.  Some days it's okay but yesterday and today and rainy days it is agony.

Many thanks for the advice,

Rachel

I broke my foot years ago and it has remained a very good indicator for the weather. My wrists can get sore when I'm doing specific tasks at the computer that are mostly mouse work. I find if I shove the keyboard forward and put the mouse directly in front of me instead of off to the side that the pain goes away. It's a more relaxed position.
