I'd never heard of them so did a quick google, they sound like really lovely characters don't they, if I saw one in the street I might think it was a pointer/fox hound cross - doh

Gosh Margot, I never thought of the word porcelaine in that way before but you are absolutely right.  I will view the dishes I inherited from my grandmother in a whole new way now.

Was anticipating a small, fragile looking dog but those are not either.

Not personally but there's a whole page in Desmond Morris's book. "This breed's popular name is derived from its pale, translucent coat which is reminiscent of the lustre of porcelain. In earlier days it was known as the Chien de Franche-Comte, the Franc Comptoise, or the Comptoise, from the district on the French/Swiss borders where it originated. It was developed to hunt roe deer and hare."

There's more about their history and personality but basically a French scenthound, fierce on the hunt, serene and docil at home with a musical voice. Been around since the 17th century. That ought to get you some points.
