Topic Dog Boards / General / Sleeping pattern (puppy)

What is the average sleeping pattern for a 4 months old puppy?
Amber goes through the night 12am to 5am (no matter how much she sleeps during the day).

Sometimes we think she sleeps too much and we poke her and sometimes she doesn't.

Today, she woke me up at 5am and after going to the toilet (tried to put her in the crate but she wouldn't have it so took her out after 10mns) then she stayed with me for 45mns and then collapse asleep on the kitchen floor for 3hrs (she hasn't done that before - usually she sleeps when we are at work 9am onwards. She is also sleepy around 1pm and again 8pm but like I said it varies slightly from one day to another. Maybe she is adjusting of having us home for the hols (since 25th?)

Hi There
We have a 4 month old Golden Retriever too, as I'm at home with him all day I know his sleeping patterns quite well.

Jasper sleeps as soon as we go to bed each night and he wakes at 6am in the morning usually for a wee, then goes back to sleep until we wake up.   He has his breakfast and a walk around 8am and plays around the house until about 10.30 then he will sleep until 12.30ish, has his lunch and another walk or play and he will sleep in the afternoon for a couple of hours but then he is awake from around 4 until we go off to bed - doesn't matter what time we go he won't go to sleep until we do!

I wouldn't poke her when she is asleep - puppies do need their sleep I believe!

Hello Maria,

Hope you won't mind me asking this:
What time do you go to bed and wake up in general (this will allowed me to see how much sleep your pup gets through the night)?
Amber goes to sleep pretty much by 12am (I don't think a puppy should stay up longer than that) in her crate in our lounge while my husband continues to watch his TV (it doesn't bother her - even when he switches of the box and goes to bed).

Thanks, Shirley.

Hi shirley
We usually go to bed about 10.30 - midnight, but whatever time he stays with us until we go to bed, then he waits at the bottom of the stairs until we take him up to bed with us, we don't let him use the stairs to protect his joints - but he's getting very heavy.
He wakes up at 6am then after his wee will go back to sleep until we get up at around 7.30am!

Good point! Amber definately goes down after 1:30pm and up 3:20pm and gets very sleepy around 8pm no matter how much we play or entertain her!!

I also have a 4 month old pup and am at home all the time, so know his sleep pattern well. We normally put him in his crate at around midnight and dont hear a peep until we get up (normally 7am) but if (like today) we get up at 8am (oh such a great lie-in!) then he is absolutely fine til then. He then gets a walk, normally at about 8-8.30am and walks seem to hype him up further so doesnt rest as soon as we get back. He is like a child that doesnt want to give in and doesnt realise when he is tired. He will then literally drop to the floor and have a mid morning snooze. He remains quite sleepy most of the day, getting up for some training sessions and lunch but not crazily active...he is then wide awake for the evening (about 6pm) and this is when my other dog and the pup REALLY liven up. I think they like it when my OH gets home, they really love to play then, so we take them for another stroll in the evening when it has cooled down a little. He then has another little snooze after his walk and stays quite sleepy til bedtime (unless they suddenly start playing again at midnight!)

Firstly, don't disturb your pup when she's taking a nap - they need their sleep to promote development. At 4 months, she will want a good deal of sleep and I can remember Nips would just drop off mid rush around to catch some zzzzzzzzzzs. His routine, at that age, was to be put to bed at around midnight and sleep through until about 7 am. He'd then be incredibly lively for an hour or so before having a couple of hours mid morning sleep after which we'd have a small walk. He was still having lunch at that age and afterwards he'd cavort around in the garden and we'd do some training before his afternoon nap (an hour or so) and another burst of activity. Then there'd be a brief snooze before I combined a walk with picking up the OH from the station. Being born in August, at 4 months we were into short days and dark nights hence much earlier walks. He was certainly at his liveliest in the evening and would be incredibly energetic until around 9pm when he'd climb on my lap and fall asleep. He'd often have another short energy burst after the 10 o'clock news but basically the latter part of the evening was wind-down time.

It's actually impossible (IMHO) to get a pup to stick to a schedule for sleeping and waking (other than setting a convenient bedtime) since they know their own requirements and if they want to sleep then they'll literally sleep on their feet!

Thank you all!! What you are telling me again is Amber knows exactly what she wants!
He pattern is very similar to yours so I guess she is training us again!! What a clever pup we have :-D
I just needed to hear that she is not sleeping to much (we sleep a lot when we are sick so I just needed a little reassurance

Human babies sleep a lot when they're healthy - that's when they do their growing. :)

True!! Except my baby is now 11 and nearly as told as me (kind of forgotten) :-D Thanks for the reminder!! :-)

Of babies and sleep (sorry, I know it's a tangent!) I still remember when my youngest son (now aged 23) was 4 weeks old and very partial to waking up at nights. The health visitor, a mature unmarried lady who'd never had children herself, suggested in all seriousness that I keep the baby awake all day. On asking how, without the aid of a pointy stick, I was supposed to stop a contented baby from nodding off she remained clueless.

Hi Ktee
No problem:
He plays around the office with his toys until 5.30 then I spend time playing with him, walking, grooming, and just generally giving him lots of attention, he loves watching us cook and sits with us watching TV.  I know I've painted a picture of a really boring lifestyle but we enjoy it!!

He will also have a nap by my feet if he gets bored while I'm working!!
