Topic Other Boards / Foo / Fishing Bait help please??!
- By newfiedreams Date 27.07.06 11:11 UTC
 Hi, does anyone have a 'recipe' to make fish Bread Bait please?? I need something that will stay on the hook fairly well, but I can't remember how to 'make' it! Many thanks in advance! All the best, Dawn

I used to just use plain bread, squished round the hook - but it didn't stay on particularly well...didn't know there was a recipe for something better?

:::sits back and waits with interest

:D

LOL!! That's why I'm asking!! When I went fishing as a kid, my uncle used to 'make' the bait, I think he used to mix it somehow...which makes it stick better on the hook??? don't think it's rocket science :P but I would like some ideas!! LOL You crack me up LOL Thank you for making me smile today! (no wonder it didn't stay on the hook...you didn't use the magic mix LOL) All the best, Dawn

Also sitting back and waiting with interest LOL :D

Oh you've done it now Dawn, I'm in the middle of melting beef dripping...I reckon that could the missing magic ingredient - what do you think? It's tasty - well so the dogs say - waterproof :D and sticky???? Unfortunately I don't actually have time to go and try it out on fish - but I could put soem in the dogs paddling pool, see how long they last??  :D

Can you get 'MAGGOT' flavoured dripping??? :P
- By JaneG [gb] Date 27.07.06 12:58 UTC
I dare say you could....if you left an unwrapped pack outside long enough :D
- By JaneG [gb] Date 27.07.06 13:05 UTC
right the dripping has melted and I've soaked a couple of slices of bread in it....tried to mold them into balls but it's very HOT...should probably wait till it cools a bit  I'm off to take the doggles swimming, will update on the fatty ball situation later :D

Well, we've been going to Conway Bay/Rhos on sea...apparently 'feathers' are fine for Mackeral(sp??) but some use bread, maggot or lug worm for Mullet or Sea Bass?? We tried plain bread on Tuesday, but with a tide it gets pulled about a bit and the bread doesn't stay on very well...I'm not at all keen on handling lug worm or even maggots(put off maggots when said uncle used to pop them in his mouth whilst he was loading his hooks YUK!!) and I believe if you fish you should be able to load your own bait, get hooks out and release fish yourself without having the abdabs LOL

We'd love to go out on the boat, but with the doggies it's a bit trickier...Storm always wants to 'save' us and bring the boat into shore LOL and the wee boys need watching ALL the time...life jackets or no...I'm reluctant to go out in UK waters as it's so cold even in the Summer...wouldn't want to risk Storm NOT saving them lol

Any advice greatly appreciated!!  All the best, Dawn

You're welcome
Have a lovely time, sounds great and if you are hungry on the way home here is the nearest Sainsburys ;)

OK...I think I've cracked it! Bread with melted dripping on, put to cool in the fridge then moulded into balls and dropped in water looks good, holds together well.....the dogs have been 'dooking' for them in the paddling pool.....all that remains to be seen is if fish actually like them?!?
- By newfiedreams Date 27.07.06 16:14 UTC
 Ahh bless you my friend...much appreciated and hope the doggies enjoyed them there balls!!! :D :D :D

You only really need the feathers for mackerel no bait needed (we have'nt used any) bass can be caught on sandeels/lugworm as can pollack.

(we are in anglesey and the makerel has come down theres pretty much an abundance of it around i know rhos on sea well its not too far from us)

Hi
You need new bread and not the pre pack stuff which can be to dry but not all. I rip a piece off the bread and fold it then squeeze the middle where the hook tip will be placed through .You then need to squeeze the bread around the shank of the hook. This will hold but don't put to large a lump on if you are fishing flowing water as it tends to lift from the bottom when ledgering. I've used this all my life and its never let me down.
One tip never use bread that has been frozen, its just never the same.
If you want to use maggots hook them by the tail and if you want to colour them use food dye and colour a slice of bread then leave it in the container with the maggots and the maggots eat away and turn the colour of the dyed bread.
You can use a bread punch if floating with a small hook but it will have to be replaced each cast.
If you are after carp on a lake then you can put a crust section on to float on the top or even better use dog biscuit drilled and hair rigged. The carp will suck away on the biscuit but unlike bread they can not rip it apart. Just remember when stricking on the surface hit with less power as there are no water layers to cushion the strike or you might rip the lip off the fish.
You can even buy fake bread now and fake maggots which work but not as good as the real thing.
Regards
Stu
