Topic Dog Boards / Health / Grass "wigging" & Bloating

I just wanted to ask a quick question....

My pup is 9 months and is jack russel x corgi x collie. He took a bloat about 4 weeks ago and needed to be put under to get his stomach x-rayed and then drained. The bloat happened about 4:30pm and his last feed had been about 11:30 am.  At the time he seemed a bit constipated and most of us at work (he goes to work with me) reckon the constipation may have been part of the reason he bloated.  But he also has a habit of "wigging" grass when he is playing with other dogs. He grabs grass shakes his head or repeatedly pulls the grass up by the roots.
I never thought about that being a cause until he bloated again 3 weeks later. Again after playing in the manner above.
Do you all reckon it could be a cause?  His bloats took place long after he ate so feeding and playing straight away wasn't a factor.
The vet did say he was unusal in the he is a small dog (less than 10kg) and a puppy still.
He was also extremly sickly as a young pup. (After a de-worming) and any damage cause may also be a factor.
But I guess I was also wondering about the grass "wigging"......would you reckon he would be taking air into his stomach when he does this???

Cheers
Julie

Is that what the vet said bloat? as in GDV?

I have never heard of it small breeds (although not unknown) and 9months too? (its a rarity but again not unknown so young).

What exactly did they do to him? i presume they tubed him to release the excess gas?

According to this site

http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm

bloat is often related to swallowing air, as well as being food/stress related.

Hi Julie,
I have 2 of my dogs do this.  One grazes and the other copies him but spits it out!  Touch wood, I've never had bloat in any of my dogs.

Sarah.
