I am worying about the heat because we are going on the YKC camp and I've  been worrying about camping with my dogs in the heat. At the moment I'm keeping them in the house as much as I can.  We went to our first open show last weekend and we had no shade and it was so hot after a few hours we thought it was too much so we took the dogs home.  I don't know how the show dogs and their owners  cope with it..I guess they get used to it and know what to bring and how to cope.   So if it is like this for the camping  week ( which I doubt ) I'd appreciate any tips. Thanks.

Also please give any hot weather tips, hot travel tips etc...that would be useful to people.

Cool mats for travelling and lying on
Ice packs for putting round cages
Fill up bottles with water and freeze and pack around dogs/cages they can then drink it when it melts
Cooling bandannas
Reflective sheets for cars
Windowsox for car windows, remove 85% UV rays, keep insects out and you can use them with windows closed or open
Battery fans
Cover car at night with sheets will be very cool in morning
Air conditioning
Plant sprays filled with chilled water
Easidri towel which can be used to dry dogs and when wet, draped over dog to keep cool
Electrolyte sachets in case of heat exhaustion
Ice for them to chew
Feed frozen food

Just ordered some WindowSox for my Impreza-LOL I am impressed that they have them to fit Imprezas as they don't have window frames so I'm intrigued as to how they will fit !

Just spent a few days camping in North Yorkshire.  It wasn't any trickier than being at home really.  Walking was done at dawn and dusk and dog was positioned outside the tent on the shaded side during the day.  We have a canvassed topped Landrover that was cool enough for short trips out but, just like being at home, there were some limitations on when, where and how long we could safely park up.  I suppose the biggest difference is the dog has to go everywhere with us as she could not be left in the tent during the day but then I never do that on camping trips because of her security.
Not sure what sort of camping you mean but a plentiful supply of ice and frozen mats are not on option under canvas :)

sounds like you had a great camping trip. Better sun then rain for camping.  This weather really is amazing! Booked tomorrow off to go to the seaside..that will cool the dogs down!

yes sadly the frozens are no good for camping. And yes I woud never leave mine unguarded too..not worth the risk.  The air conditioning isn't that useful either! lol!

I guess the coolest place is under the car.

Just bough myself a spray bottle. And a washing up bowl for a paddling pool.

I will be at camp as a senior member - but am taking a dog as someone has asked to borrow her - so hoping very much it cools down as much as I dont want to to rain - done camps before in the heat + rain!! .
I would say take plenty of old towls so that they can be soaked with water and layed over the dog/for the dog to lie on, spray bottles for the dogs as well so that whilst training the dogs can easily be sprayed down - and you will also see a lot of dogs being soaked by the water taps.
If in the caravan weve always found the reflective sheets have helped keep crates cool etc if layed over the top/sides of them

JG posted a couple of very informative links today about combating and dealing with heat stroke.  One of the pieces of advise offered was

>Do not cover the dog with a wet towel as it will prevent evaporation.

Better to just keep damping the dog down with water that can then evaporate I think.

We enjoyed our camping last week very much but we had the ability to opt for campsites close to a two forests and a beach and could please ourselves over what activities we did and when.  I don't really know how these camps work but I have to say if I was on an unsheltered site and involvement in activities was expected of me I would probably cancel in such weather as this.

I read on one not to let them gulp down cold water as it can put them in shock( or somethng like that) but just take sips.....  lol... I don't think sip was the right word for dogs.

I thionk on the camp as it's run by experts once we are there we will all get the right advice and any help we might need... As our dogs are quite young ( 18months )so they might need to join in a little less then more mature dogs... so migh my son because it might be  frustrating for him if the dogs keep slipping back into puppy mode! Oh I do hope they are good!

yes I don't it so hot but also don't want rain... at least today has been a nice relief. If it's like this it'l be great..cool mornigs but warm relaxing evenings. Lovely.

Hope you had a good time...we all loved the camp and the dogs did too! But now they are very tired and sleeping it off.  The heat was amazing though!  For the Uk it was heat beyond anything I can remember....totally relentless!  I can't believe we loved it when it thundered and rained!  lol!    ...but as the organisers changed the dog training sessions to  very early mornings and evenings it was fine for the dogs and we could hide under trees in the day to try to cool off as well as let the dogs have a quick dip in the pond. It certainly is a very enjoyable and very very impressively well run camp!  And great for my kids to met other kids who train their dogs as well as having a lot of fun activities together.  They loved it so much.    Glad to be home to my bed and bathroom though!

We didn't go this year, but four of our dogs did (friends have 1 dog and 4 kids!).  Like yours they are absolutely shattered and don't want to get out their beds.
