Topic Dog Boards / Health / runs getting worse
- By mollymoto [gb] Date 18.07.06 05:56 UTC
I'm so annoyed and upset. Molly had the runs on sat evening so popped into the vets on sun to see what they suggested. The receptionist said try the chicken and rice technique and if that had no effect bring her in on monday. I go off to work yesterday knowing I had a meal out so wouldn't be home until 9pm, telling OH to ring vets and pick up some probiotic stuff (can't remember the name but have used it before) as Molly stll had the runs. Came home last night to find that he didn't bother and even though she had had an accident on the floor and some was very runny other parts not, hadn't bothered to do anything.
I'll get to the point ..... Molly has been up a few times during the night and this morning is refusing to eat or drink. I tried plain chicken after the chicken and rice failed and even scambled (no butter or milk) some eggs to no avail. She didn't even mind when gutsy Freya eat the eggs  Now i'm waiting for the vets to open whilst she is obviously in discomfort (she whimpering softly) and panting. I also feel guilty for not coming home and doing something about it yesterday knowing that OH tends to be slightly lazy when I'm not around  (but thats a different board!)
Poor Molly! :(

Poor Molly, I hope you've managed to get her to the vets by now and hopefully she's feeling better. When mine have an upset tummy I always starve them for 24hrs before starting the chicken and rice and I also give them protexin prokolin, which is probiotics and kaolin. You can buy some here and just keep it in the fridge for emergencies :)

Well we had an appointment for 9.50 but noticced blood in the poo so took her in immediately. She has prokolin, tablets, powder for the water and had an injection. I have to monitor her for 24hr and if she continues to vomit they'll admit her and put her on a drip. She has had a tablespoon of naturesdiet with her tablet and she ate it. Fingers crossed will let you know how she goes on.

And the vet gave no clues as to what could be causing this? She' always had a 'sensitive' tum and a few bouts of the runs hasn't she? Did he offer to do further tests, or was it a 'just wait and see' ? Poor Molly :(
- By mollymoto [gb] Date 18.07.06 09:23 UTC
He said she had a vary bad bug that had casued ulcers which had been irritated and bled, hence then blood in her stools. He said to take her back on thrusday and conatct them immediately if she gets worse. Molly has had a sensitive tum since 7 months when she was very poorly over the xmas period, ever since then if theres a tummy bug going she gets it :(. This faired up after trying some beef and tripe naturesmenu which could well be coincidence. When i was paying  someone else rang the vets with similar symptons so its probably just doing the rounds. At least she ate something. She has to have more prokilin at 2 so will give her another spoon of natures diet soon. And lots of hugs. I might enquire to the vets about her sensitive nature though and she if theres any tests he could do. Thanks

Thanks Jenna. Have to say OH keeps ringing so I have informed him that Molly is very disappointed with him and will NOT be wagging her tail at him when he comes home! :) Maybe it would make Molly feel better if he also cooked dinner and cleaned the house LOL :)

I hope Molly's treatment is effective soon and she's relieved of the pain and discomfort she must be in :(   Did your vet do an ultra sound to determine that she had ulcers   I'm thinking probably not as you'd have mentioned it.

Personally I think Molly's history of over sensitivity definitely requires deeper investigation but it seems from your post that you've not filled your vet in on her ongoing problems so obviously he can't be held responsible for not delving deeper and following on with blood and faecal samples at the very least.

Please keep us posted,
good luck, Teri :)

Thanks uys. Molly is perking up slowly but there is definately an improvement.

Teri you're absolutely right I haven't discussed her sensitivity with food so will bring it up. No he didn't do an ultrasound but i guess that would be his next move if she didn't improve.

Well I'm off to try to get her to take the prokolin and I'm going with the element off surprise for this one!!! :)

Could i add a natural yoghurt that contains "good" bacteria to my meals??  Or am I being completely loopy ...... don't answer that I already know the answer
- By TrishaH [gb] Date 18.07.06 12:02 UTC
Ours is on antibiotics for cystitis at the moment, and she's getting probiotic yoghurt drinks to replace the good bacteria  :)

Hope Molly's better very soon!
- By Teri Date 18.07.06 12:24 UTC
I wouldn't give yoghurt or any dairy product to a dog with loose motions - you can buy non dairy probiotics from health food stores or on the net if you decide that's the way to go.

The Prokolin you are using has probiotics in it - I'd not mess about further until completely recovered and then, in view of the history, under vet supervision :)

Hi,
There seems to be a lot of it about. My daughters dog has had it, She has tryed dry biscuits and mince morsells. it got a lot better, the minute she gave anythink eles it was back.
I would have to consult a vet if this happened to a Samoyed as it could cause intestine infusion.
Very quickly. Better be safe than sorry, go to the vets. I would.
I wonder why, birds carrying it foxes:mad:?

Most likely other dogs - most diseases are species-specific.
- By Teri Date 18.07.06 12:38 UTC
The poster has been to the vet :)

It's not necessarily a good idea to lead anyone to believe that similar symptoms are present due to the same cause
- By denese [gb] Date 18.07.06 20:04 UTC
Yes terri, I know the poster has been to the vets, but! if I was not happy I would go back again,
It's better than saying I wish!! I had!!
- By Teri Date 18.07.06 21:24 UTC
Perhaps if your responses made references to what the poster has *already done* and is *already planning to do* there would be less confusion :)

Hope Molly is better today.
- By mollymoto [gb] Date 19.07.06 11:42 UTC
Molly is definately better today :) Infact her and freya were playing chase last night so am feeling much better. Only thing is Freya had the runs yesterday evening but that could have been down to the amount of food she ate (taking advantage of Molly not wanting any ). Am straving her for 24 hours, also she didn't get up during the night to go which she usually does when she has a tum bug.

Anyway once we've had the holiday am going to talk to the vet about Mollys sensitivity.
Thanks to all

That's good news :)  Glad she's feeling better and hopefully Freya's tum will settle asap with a 24 hour fast.

Thanks for the update.  Teri
- By mollymoto [gb] Date 19.07.06 12:00 UTC
Thanks Teri. Fingers crossed for Freya . OH obviously felt guilty and bought pizza and a bottle of wine home :). I bought the girls a new toy to cheer them up ....... its now in the pile with all the other toys that they don't really use

Hi Mollymoto

Sorry I didnt catch this thread earlier as I had a similar experience with mine a few months back and may have been able to offer a little reassurance. Its really frightening when you see blood in their poo isnt it? Im so glad shes getting back to normal now.

Mine has a sensitive tum so we can never really give him any treats or anything - even ones labelled as sensitive. However, we do know the root of his problem so thats less of a worry.

Anyway, im just glad that your girls are ok - especially in this heat.
Take Care

Just an update. Freya seems fine after her 24 hr strave so fingers crossed they stay that way.

Thanks for all the advice and reasurrances, am going to talk to the vet re Mollys sensitivity though.
