Topic Dog Boards / Health / Is this normal...metacam?

We noticed my 2 year old GR was weeing alot more than normal a few days ago, she must have wanted to go out at least 30 times in one evening, (but was definitely urinating not just straining to 'go') so for that night we gave her pearl barley water and frozen cranberry juice and made her drink a lot. So we couldnt get an appointment until late afternoon the next day and by that time she seemed to have reduced the amonut of time she needed to wee by about half, she was of normal high spirits, playing with our other dog and generally seemed very well. My bf still took her to the vet just to be sure and they did a urine test and said that she seemed to be flushing out the cystitis and said we did well by giving her the pearl barley and cranberry, I was expecting that they would give her a short course of anti biotics just to clear things up, but when he came back he said they had given her an anti-infammetry injection and a pain relief injection, they then pescribed some anti-biotics (as I expected) and also Metacam...now I had no idea what metacam was but after looking up their website it seems absolutely ridiculous that they prescribed it in this case, everything I have read says that it is used for osteoarthritis and other painful conditions...and after searching on here no one has ever mentioned it to be used for something like this, and have also read about some of the awful side effects and how it should be given very carefully, we made it clear that she was acting normally and wasnt in any pain, and that she was definitely inproving in the amount of times she wanted to wee. Does this sound odd to anybody else? I know nobody can say for sure as you havent seen my dog, but I can tell you for sure that she is and was perfectly happy and lively and after one day of the anti-biotic is actually weeing a normal amount, so really, how bad can it have been? I have had a few incidents in the past with this vets, where they have tried to perscribe things that I didnt think were necessary, one time recently was that she had an infection in her nail (where it had been ripped off) and the vet said he wanted to amputate her entire paw pad, I of course asked if could we please try some other treatments before he takes this drastic action, and of course it got better in a few weeks. We are still with this vets as there are only 2 in my area and Ive heard not so great reports about the other on anyway...

I would be glad to hear people opinions on this...

Hi

I had the exact same thing happen, except in my case it was a cat with the cystitis and not a dog, and he DID get antibiotics. Was sent home with a bottle of Metacam. It's still in the drawer, unopened. I saw no reason at all to use something as strong and with potential side effects for something as minor. Likewise when my Papillon was sent home wth Rimadyl after just having been neutered, I never used it.

Normally the Vet gives you antbiotics and gives an anti-infmmatory injection to take the discomfort away, cannot see the reason for Metacam. If it were me, I would do what Goldmali did, in the drawer.!
