Can someone please tell me how many days a bitch will stand for a dog?I have a bitch in season and have put one of my males in kennels as he was distressed that he couldn't get at the bitch.Everything was fine until day 14 when she obviously reached her receptive time. The other 2 males are fine with her(although kept seperate!).However she has now been flirting/standing for the boys for 7 days and the other boy is due out of kennels tomorrow as I thought she'd be passed her 'co-operative' stage by now.

Hi Archer, I would still be cautious.... I had a girl who tied 7 days after her 1st tie.... and since she went to day 71 from 1st mating, I had to assume the pups came from the 3rd mating.  Like your girl she was standing.... I took her to the stud and they tied for 40mins within 5 mins..... 2 days later another tie..... 7 days after the 1st tie she was persistantly pestering my girls and demanding their attention... so I phoned stud owner and decided to take her back... again with 5 mins of intro they tied....  Only time it has ever happened to me, but simply shows that it can

I would agree that the time can be very variable.  I have had bitches visit that have been willing to stand before ovulation, and depending on the dog been mated or ignored.  Some bitches will stand almost throughout a season especially older experienced ones.

Others will only stand at the peak time two days after ovulation and a day or two after.

You need to keep her away from the males until around 28 days after her season.

My young bitch was still very interesting to her sire (who had come to mate her mother) until day 25 after the start of her season, and I had to keep her crated away from him until then, by which time his interest had moved onto the bitch he had come to visit.

One of our girls got mated a month after coming into season.  She'd been away from the boys for over 4 weeks, went back because all seemed fine and she'd gone down.  10 weeks after going back in with the boys she had 3 healthy pups, which is a big litter for the breed!!

Thank God I only have bitches living here full time, though I suppose the same problem about deciding when they are finished applies to when you start letting them mix on walks.

I assume you had to go through the faff of DNA testing the pups?

No actually there was only one boy in there at that time so we knew it was Bugsy, well Mel was still a baby as in a puppy.  Strange really because once he got to 8 he never bothered with any of the girls again even when they were in their prime.  Very weird!  he's the only male that I've known to become like this.

Also meant to say that the pup never sired any litters until he was nearly 6 years old when we found a man that can who eventually enabled us to have our first puppy by him :d  We had wanted one for so long as he'd won two res. cc's until  severe ear infection robbed him of his showing days :d

A friend of mine has a Great Dane who will stand at anytime, what a tart!  Mind you I doubt many suitors could fulfill the requirements.
