Topic Other Boards / Foo / Parking near Barts Hospital

Tomorrow we have to go to Barts oncology unit and I am trying to find parking in the near area. My OH uses a wheelchair so we need to find somewhere to park fairly close to the hospital. I have googled the question and have found a couple of car parks nearby but we are unable to prebook a space.

Do any of you know of any carparks in that area where there is likely to be available parking - we can get a taxi if it is too far to push the chair. My big worry is that we won't be able to find a space to park near the hospital and he cannot travel on the underground in this heat as he has breathing problems.

There is no parking at the hospital except for 3 disabled bays but the chances of getting one of those are probably infinitesimal :)

We will be coming into London through the Blackwall tunnel from Kent and any help with parking would be greatly appreciated. We only found out today that we had to go to Barts or I would have asked earlier. I have a horrible feeling that he will have to stay in so am  really lookiing forward to navigating myself back out of London in the evening rush hour:eek:

Sorry, I don't know the area at all Harley, but perhaps you could phone the hospital?  They may be able to help.

Good luck.

Earl's suggestion sounds best to me! (also try the WRVs..oh cant remember name!! the womens volunatry service that do work at Hospitals.. as a Hospital reception might be busy to call.)
I just phoned my OH as he works and spends all day driving round the City as he's a surveyor working on large buildings and has worked on NHS hospitals..but (typical bloke!) he couldnt remember parking, but did say that there are alot of meters around that area for street parking. oh and dont forget about the congestion charge!
Good Luck for tommorrow! Hope all goes well for you x

Thanks for the replies - we used to get the train up but a wheelchair and the underground are not ideally suited. I don't mind pushing the chair but I am quite small (5'1" and 8 stone) so in this heat I think I also would need the services of the hospital!

Because of the short notice it has not been possible to arrange any other form of transport - it has been hard enough to arrange dog care for the day -   but it is also an emergency appointment so can not be put off.

Hopefully after this visit we will be referred back to our local hospital so life will be a bit easier.

I just hate not being able to dot the i's and cross the t's but no doubt we will cope.

Thanks to you all

Lizzie

I would also think that you would be able to park in a non-disabled car park and press the buzzer to get out as if like our hospital disabled persons do not pay.  I also know that at our hospital if the disabled spaces are blocked they are allowed to use the road at the side of the hospital which has double yellow lines and that they won't get booked.  This has never happened as we have quite a few disabled spaces here.  I'm shocked tht there are only 3 at a hospital especially such a specialist one as tht!!

There are no parking spaces at all at Barts - the 3 spaces I referred to are disabled spaces in the street outside. I rang Westminster council to ask about using his disabled badge but they do not allow parking anywhere but in a space or at a meter. Paying to park is not a problem but finding an available empty parking space is a major headache. i can't just drop him at the entrance as he would then have to sit there until I could find somewhere to park which could be anywhere.
