Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Paignton class number query
- By danny [gb] Date 04.07.06 09:27 UTC
Due to the hot weather forthcoming again next week I want to find out the numbers of dogs in my classes at Paignton champ show. Reason is that I saw very hot and uncomfortable dogs at windsor and do not wish to stand in big classes and my flat nosed breed dog to suffer while he waits his turn.   How do I find out how many are in each class??

thanks

A phonecall to the Show Secretary (number will be in the schedule) should sort it. :)

Have spoken to her and she cannot tell me as it is against KC rules. She said take my chance. When it comes to a pug, hot weather and a class of 14 - 21 in the ring, sorry wont take the chance!!

Hi Danny,

unfortunately everyone is in the same boat at any show in hot weather :(   All you can do is either decide not to go or ensure that you have suitable items with you to keep your dog cool and comfortable during the entire show day such as a chilled mat to lie on in the cage/bench, set out with frozen bottles of water that will thaw gradually through the day, take an ice box/bag to refresh water and towels etc and a silvered sheet to deflect the sun.

You can ask the steward to seek the judge's permission for you to move to an area of the ring when judged which will provide shade / shelter for your dog - we usually have a seat ringside with a parasol set up for shade.

There are ways around things although TBH I'm intentionally missing the July shows this year because last year we felt that travelling so far with the dogs in extreme temperatures was just too risky had there been a serious traffic jam etc.  You know best how your dog and self will cope.

best wishes, Teri :)

that's interesting - I didn't know it was against KC rules to give out class numbers.   Mind you, some show secretarys can be real jobs worths and can be very obnoxious (mentioning no names)

There's no way :( unfortantly we all take our chance.  I will take a towle into the ring with me for my dogs and lay it over there coats, I don't care if it means my dog has a wet coat when the judge goes over them at least they are cooler! :) I used to take a spray into the ring when I showed boxers, so they could be kept wet and also have a drink :)

Well there are 98 Pug entries in total over 16 classes so averaging just over 6 per class -you'll know yourself if your class usually is one of the better supported ones?

It makes sense in not knowing the class entries. Not even the judge, judging that day knows the class entries, otherwise it would affect attendance, ie, big class don't bother. It has affected lower class numbers in people delibrately keeping away to stop someone from getting JW points etc. Sad but true.
Paington last year was dreadfully hot and most dogs were judged in the Wet weather tents with the panels all open. Outside looked like a ghost town. (still had the BCs judged outside all day though. Great being mostly black and white ) Unfortunately is little to no shade around the rings.
Goldmali has given you the total entries so from your experience you would know rough ideas on class entries.

IME the judge is always advised of the actual numbers in each class prior to the date of the show and of course the same will be printed in his/her judging book collected on arrival at the venue :)  Only exhibitors are kept in the dark!

Of course the judge knows on the day from the judging book. I meant that they don't know whose entered in what class (in theory anyway, not really so in practise) :)

LOL - no, they don't in theory know who's entered  but they are written to by the show secretary before the day of the appointment to advise numbers entered for eg 6PD, 4JD, 23PGD, etc etc :)
