Hi all
Last night my son found what looks like a growth on Tobys gum,
dont know why i havent seen it, although i have been away and my daughter has been looking after him,
It comes from his gum and goes down by his teeth, its the size and shape of a small broad bean and its also quite hard,
I have appointment at vets 3.30 this afternoon,
he seems fine in himself,
Just wondered if anyone had any idea what it could be?
Im worried, i lost my last dog to a tumour three years ago, worried that this is a tumour too,

Could be an ulcer from a bad tooth, but whatever it is the sooner it is checked and dealt with the better.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 04.07.06 07:54 UTC
He is only 3 years old, can they have bad teeth that young?

Heidi

According to what I have read any dog over 12 months could have bad teeth and that a high proportion have gum disease by then.

Mine have all had good teeth into old age, but I saw a young Border collie once with shocking teeth.

Well i dont want him to have bad teeth but i would rather that than a Tumour,
but would an ulcer feel hard it doesn't look like an ulcer.

Heidi

his teeth do look good
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.07.06 08:24 UTC
Well all the tooth  ones I have had have been hard (my own).  Just get it checked out and sorted/removed asap.

I will let you all know how I get on at vets later,
the day is going to go so slow
fingers crossed for Toby.

thankyou all Heidi

Hi
Just got back from vets,
Toby is booked in for a op tomorrow, the vet said it isnt a ulcer , it could be a overgrowth or it could be a tumour,
Im just glad i got him booked in so fast, got to take him tomorrow morning at 8.30,
im in tears writing this i cant believe this is happening, the vet said he is such a lovely dog and he was so well behaved bless him,
i have to think positive it could just be an overgrowth please, tomorrow is going to be a long day,

Wishing you well.  At least you will not have to wait long to find out.  Of course you will not know until it is removed and possibly laboratory checked but I do know a couple of dogs that have had these overgrowths with no problems after surgery so perhaps more common that the nasty one.
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 04.07.06 14:41 UTC
All my fingers and toes crossed for the overgrowth option.
Will be thinking of you.
- By Teri Date 04.07.06 14:40 UTC
Everything crossed for you Heidi that it's a simple, straightforward op with a good prognosis :)   It must be horrible waiting but thank God your vet is acting quickly and Toby is being treated a.s.a.p.

Sending positive, healing thoughts your way.  Give Toby a gentle cuddle from me ;)
God bless,  Teri x

Is there anything i can give him like yogurt to help him through tomorrow,
he cant eat after 8pm tonight

Heidi
- By Teri Date 04.07.06 15:05 UTC
You should be able to feed him his normal diet until 8-00pm but it's important that he only has water after that because of the anaesthetic.  Did your vet give you a cut off time for water?  It varies due to when surgery is expected to be done but often stops at midnight.   Have a word with your vet to check as in this heat he may advise differently but better to be aware and follow his instructions.

The vet told me Toby cant eat after 8pm but he can have water,
I just wondered if yogurt before 8pm would be beneficial to him because he is having an anaesthetic,

Heidi

I don't think so :)  Yoghurt is generally given to improve the friendly bacteria in the gut but that is not applicable to an anaesthetic when the recover period is driven by a lack of peristalsis which needs to return before digestion can be successful again.  Recovery from anaesthetic, after the immediate post operative drugs and oxygen, is just time to allow it to be metabolised from the system.

OK then just lots of cuddles and kisses

I have seen a few people with an overgrowth of gum,I think its called an epulus(probably spelt that wrong)but it happens a lot to pregnant women, and is easy to remove and harmless.Could this lump have always been there without you noticing?because again in people,I have seen many bony lumps, harmless, just the formation of the bone, they are called taurus,I hope this helps, please dont think the worst, although I know thats hard(sometimes we all do)its a shame that vets cant do a quick x-ray,as we do in surgery, you find out what it is in about 3 minutes.
Hope all goes well,
ash x

A quick Xray for a dog, though, involves a general anaesthetic, might as well remove it at the same time and have the benefit of an histological examination.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.07.06 17:04 UTC
Well the quicker these things re removed whatever they are the better, so lots of crossed fingers and toes here.

I wonder if it is the kind of gum overgrowth that Boxers get (the dogs) as a friend has had to get this removed from her dog twice now where it was growing over the teeth.  Wondered if it was a bull breed thing???

I'm really keeping everything crossed for you - this post brought back memories of my wonderful Merlin. In the August he had a small bump on his lower gum hardly noticible really - by October it was the size of a tennis ball and we lost him on Boxing day. I'm not telling you this to alarm you and I'm sure your lad does not have the same thing as Merlin had - he was 13 years old and he had a  highly malignant tumour. You've done exactly the right thing and I'm sure your boy will be fine. Keep us posted

Its a overgrowth, im thinking positive, its a overgrowth,
Toby is a lab but im sure labs can get overgrowths too, because thats what Toby has.
