Topic Dog Boards / General / Wearing a collar

I use a harness to walk Harvey and have his ID tag attatched to it. I never have a collar on him because I feel it must be uncomfy for him to have something round his neck all of the time and he walks better with a harness rather than a collar. I am aware that it is the law that a dog out in public must wear a collar and ID tag but I wonder if it is ok to have a harness with ID tag attatched or should he also have a collar? He is also microchipped. I have been thinking (god forbid) he ever got out then there would be far more of a chance that he would be returned quickly if he was wearing a collar and ID tag - although I am very confident that he won't wander but you never know do you? What are other peoples thoughts here?

Does he wear th harness when eh is of the lead?  If so then I think you will be fine.

My dogs wear collars and tags 24/7.  There are dangers in both wearing and not wearing one.

In my case I feel there is more danger or likelihood of danger not wearing one, as I live on a busy road ,and a moments inattention from visitors and a dog could be out of the house (small hall which means people are often through to living room before front door is closed.

My dogs do not easily panic, and even when playing have never had one get caught up in another's collar, but having thick coats with the collars nestled in their ruffs helps.

I would recommend a collar with an I.D tag, dogs get used to wearing a collar just as we do a necklace it is only strange for a day or two.

Although microchipped, the I.D. tag with address and phone number will give your dog a much quicker reunion, as once found you can be phoned direct by any jo public out walking with a mobile phone, instead of an animal needing to go where it can be scanned. So get that collar and tag on your dog, also recommend tattooing.

Rjj wears one of these from here with his four tags on it It is an offence to have your dog in a public place(that includes your car)without a collar & tag on the dog

The link showing where you can buy them doesn't seem to be working.

The law does state that the ID tag must be on a collar - there is no mention of a harness. Personally I'd have thought a collar to be far more comfortable and secure than a harness, especially when offlead.

Mine don't wear their collars indoors. They can play quite rough with each other at times and I don't want to risk an injury (or worse). They always have their collars on, with ID and license tags attached, when we leave the house.

Harvey has a little puppia mesh harness and he is very comfortable with this on when he's running around:cool: He is wearing a buster collar at the moment because he has been neutered and so will be used to having something round his neck, when this comes off next friday, I will pop a little collar on and hopefully he won't notice ;-)
