Topic Dog Boards / General / Cavalier King Charles and excessive shedding?

Hi there, I have 2 blenhiem kccs age 2 and 4, both of them since they have been pups have been shedding alot. I have to hoover twice a day and my husband and I are constantly covered in hair. They are both groomed regularly but does not help. I was reading on a website that they should not be shedding this much. I was wondering if anyone knew of any suppliments I could give them? someone recommended giving them evening primrose oil capsules and only grooming them with a comb. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice that I could try?

I would be grateful for any advice

IME Cavaliers shed to some extent 12 months of the year & mine certainly do, I use a cat slicker(small & soft)& combs & I also show mine & they never look out of coat

As they have a double coat(well should have)of long outer coat & thicker undercoat there will always be shedding as the weather changes etc. I would groom them daily as it is part of the bonding between owner & dog as well as making the dog feel more comfortable

EPO will encourage new coat to grow BTW

I am having the same problem with my cavalier who is 9 months.  He is shedding so much and I have to hoover a lot too.  I find the small rubber brushes for cats and dogs are the best.  They are shaped like dogs and cats and you can get them in most pet shops.  We have about 3 or 4 different brushes and this is by far the best.

My boy doesn't shed much, but my girl's quite fluffy - it's more my Yankee that leaves his entire show coat on our sofa every day though!

Must admit I never see mine shed, ever. All the other dogs make up for it though!

Carrie what food are you feeding? Often times an unsuitable food will cause excessive shedding.

Isnt it royal jelly that encourages coat growth Moonmaiden?

Carrie i would give fish oil which is an omega 3 before i would give EPO which is an omega 6 and is usually found in abundance in commercial foods anyways, think grains. Dont forget to always give vitE along with any oils.

My Cav is shedding quite a lot at the moment too but I blame the weather - it's been so inconsistant, one day boiling hot and then a few days later like the middle of winter:rolleyes: I bought a zoom groom on the advice of Moonmaiden and its fantastic :-D

EPO stimulates healthy cell growth & hence can stimulate coat growth as can RJ Lots of natural supplements stimulate cell growth(biotin for example)& this results in more coat-well it has done in my dogs

If they are anxious or over exicted a lot, that will increase shedding too, so might be something to look at.
