Well perhaps not that dramatic but that is what I said after I heard a woman say to her daughter "No, I don't want those potatoes (Jersey Royals), they're dirty, you have to wash them."

I'd have been more miffed at paying for the weight of the dirt :D :D :D :D - could weigh as much as 2 or 3 lovely jersey royals

Must admit, I always go for the 'ready washed' Jersey Royals
the dirty ones play havoc with my finger nails

What gets me is those pre-prepared veggies in those plastic pouches (eg Sainsbury's Taste the Difference peas) that you are supposed to put in the microwave so that all the nutrients are blasted out of them.

I draw the line at pre packed veggies - thats down right lazy:rolleyes: and they are so expensive! I can't be doing with dirty potatoes though, my Mum and Dad got me a big sack full of mucky potatoes from a farm shop and I binned them

I couldn't stand scrubbing and peeling filthy spuds!!!
Do what the 'old gals' do in Norfolk - cook everything with the dirt still on :-)

Incredible  They keep so much fresher with the dirt on too as it helps keep the light off them.

Absolutely. If they're washed the light turns them green and creates toxins.
I never thought about the wieght of the dirt! I have been known whilst in Sainsburys to break off the VERY long stems from Brocalli....its expensive enough without paying for whats chucked

but they dont seem to leave so much on these days. I must admit to prefering my spuds and carrots to be as they came out the ground. I give pre-washed ones a damn good scrub anyway, same as the rest of the veg and fruit, you never know whats been sprayed on them. I did grow up digging/picking fruit and veg out of our garden, stepdad a gardener in his spare time, and there is nothing nicer than home grown just picked fruit and veg yum :)

Haven't you got a dog then? ;)

I was thinking the same. My dog can hear a carrot being scraped from any room in the house. She gets thrown the carrot tops, broccoli stalk, cauli leaves, etc.
Yes, I have a dog, and yes they eat the leftovers, but they are fed Arden grange solely at the moment. I object to paying for something that we dont eat though. yes I'm tight, background and tight budget prevails :D :D Actually, never mind hearing them being prepared, I have to watch for them stealing the damn veg out of the basket :) :D

And there was me hinking it was because they're now in see thru platic bags or left in open boxes. When I grew up bought potatoes (as opposed to home grown) came in huge paper sacks :D :D Clean or dirty they lasted for ages. These days I buy what we're going to eat for that meal, else they go green or sprout :( :(
my one dog knows the sound of a carrot peeler and the sound of the tops being cut off :D :D the other one looks on in disbelief as she guzzles them :D
I always think spuds or any veg with a bit of muck on proves just how fresh they are, my Mum always reckoned a bit of mucknever hurt anyone anyway ;)

Here's a thought,
After reading the links supplied on the Pickling thread, I've been cogitating on the problem of sprouting potatoes, and wonder if it's because they are stored in a cold place (supermarkets apparently can store things for months in a cold room) and then brought into normal temperatures, causing them to sprout as if spring has come ??
as I said - just a thought ;)

I found that the Jerseys were going green within a day or two of buying them and have started keeping them in a bag in the bottom of the fridge and it has kept them green-free. Keeping them cold definitely keeps them from going green

Don't get through a lot of potatoes as we like Pasta and Rice more, but I keep my spuds in the fridge in Spring nd Summer.

Love new pembrokshire and Rufford new potatoes, I always scrape them,
Sheila.
