Today I have received a cheque in the post from the Halifax.  A couple of years or so ago I lodged a complaint with them about having been mis sold our endowment policy.  We were told we had no case by them and didn't take it any further.  A couple of weeks ago out of the blue I received a letter to say that despite refusing us before, they now thought we might be entitled to some compensation - not for having been mis sold a policy, but because we may have lost out financially by having an endowment rather than a repayment mortgage.  Apparently the cheque we received covers the difference in what we have paid out over the years (but comes nowhere near close to the shortfall in our endowment policy).

I am now totally suspicious as to whether we would be entitled to much more if we went to one of the companies that are advertised on TV etc.  I am tempted to get some independent advice (but haven't really got any spare cash at the moment), but thought someone on here might be able to help (knowledgeable lot that you are :) )

Thanks, Fiona

Hi Fiona,

Could I ask when you took your mortgage out as I'm with the Halifax and I have an endowment policy with them....you can PM me if you prefer as I'd like to know how to complain to them too.

Thanks

I've read through Martin's site and it gives great advice about how to claim yourself.  I don't know anyone who was told that they might not have enough money to repay their mortgage.  Everyone that I know whas told that it would repay their mortgage AND give them a lump sum as well! :(  If that's what you were told too, then you have a claim.

Val, thanks for the link - very informative. Yes we were told that too, but I don't know if the amount we received today (quite a small amount compared with the shortfall) is all that we would be entitled to.

I know 3 people who have claimed themselves - not Halifax - and all have received the amount to pay off the shortfall.  No bonus that they were promised, but at least their mortgage was paid.  Give it a go! :D

PS subscribe to the website - he'll save you plenty! ;)

Just dont cash that cheque till you have sorted it :D I was sold an endowment policy to go with a mortgage, but the bloke who sold it me was good in that it was for slightly over double mortgage amount at maturity, not including bonuses. It now has made the original mortgage (moved, bigger mortgage but kept the endowment) but it is an under producing one, had it been simply for the amount of the mortgage it wouldnt have come near.
