Untill today I didnt realise that there was a Mastiff.  I thought a mastiff was just short for bull mastiff lol  I seen this huge dog today at work and started talking to the owner.  I hadnt seen a dog so big he was huge.  I said to the owner oh I love bull mastiffs my parents wanted one when I was growing up.  The women, everytime I said bull mastiff replied MASTIFF lol.  A few mins later she stopped me and said...ur getting on my bloody nerves now, its a mastiff and not a bull mastiff and walked offf, it wasnt till i came home and looked on net that i realised there were to different dogs lol.

So for my info, (incase she comes in again lol what the main difference in these types of dogs ie build temprement etc.

Goes off with head held low, listening to the mutters of ...what an idiot he is lol:eek:

The Mastiff is a much older breed than the Bull Mastiff (one of the original 'designer dogs with the made-up name' - a cross between a Bulldog and a Mastiff)! It's reputed that the Romans were so impressed with the breed that they took the English Mastiff back to Rome as a war-dog ...

I get 'told' that Tyson is a Bulllmastiff all the time. :D But they are totally different breeds. The biggest difference i suppose is there size. A Mastiff is much bigger than a Bullmastiff. I've only ever met one Bullmastiff so i cant comment on their temperament, but Mastiffs are so gentle and laid back....Gentle Giants. ;-)

I have a few pics of my big baby in my profile if you want a peek. :-)

the bullmastiff has the same temperment as the mastiff because they are smaller than the mastiff they dont tend to slobber as much unless there is food about  i have a 2 and 1/2 year old female called lucy and now a 10 week old boy called chas they are great around kids and other animals we dont have cats but the local pet shop does and lucy loves nothing more to go in there and happily let the cats climb all over her, Mackleback i think tyson is a lovley looking dog and i think i have seen you and pics of your boy on another forum and its all ways great to see shuch big dogs showing just how gentle they can be with young children

The Mastiff should have a more laid-back temperament than the Bullmastiff.

The Breed Standards say that the Mastiff's temperament should be "Calm", while the Bullmastiffs's should be "high-spirited" ...

I agree. But, like i said i have only met one Bullmastiff before and that dog grabbed the loose skin under Tysons neck and shook him. :-( Tyson just stood there as if to say "what'd i do?"  I'm sure that not all Bullmastiffs are like that, but that one definately seemed to be more highly strung than a Mastiff.

Thanks for all the lovely comments everyone. :D Tyson loves children and is so gentle with them. But can be somewhat clumsy at times. ;-)

Tyson looks adorable :).  I have been lucky enough to meet a couple of mastiffs and they both had excellent temperements.  I would love a mastiff one day :).

I love all big breeds (always wanted a Great Dane when I was younger) but have to admit that I think a Dobermann or the like is my limit as he's almost too strong for me as it is! I just did a google search and read that the heaviest English Mastiff on record was 25 stone!

Gorgeous fella!! Couldnt you just give him a big squeeze??! I love giving blue hugs, but then he rests his head on my shoulder and leaves me a lovely slobber mark  :D Will have to get some updated pics of Blue to you Zo! :D

This is great as it clears up some confusion for me. There was a couple who had what I now know to be a Mastiff (I too thought Bullmastiffs and Mastiffs were the same breed).  They had a problem as they had always play wrestled him from young and now that he was 18 mths when he wrestled them with paws on their shoulders the lady owner couldn't take his weight and would fall over.  He sometimes would decide to have a 'play' on walks and so she would end up on the deck with this huge puppy on top of her.

I've since seen Bullmastiffs and was confused as they look so similar apart from the height.
