a few weeks ago i posted about my old tyme bulldog and his intermittent sickness. for the last 8 months he has been vommiting / regurgitating his food. every two or three weeks he will have an episode where his food come back up as soon as he has finished eating and the occasional time when he is sick after drinking a lot of water. 6 weeks ago the vet did some blood work and xrays. the only thing that showed up was that his stomach wall is a little thick. we then put him on chicken and rice for 4 weeks (which we have before) and he only brought up a very small amount twice in those four weeks. i went back to the vet last week who is now saying it could be  food allergy and put the dog on hills d/d prescription diet. the first two days he was sick twice, quite a while after eating but after drinking a lot of water. he was then fine for 7 days. yesterday he drank a lot and vommited just water. today i fed him at 4 am before i went to work. my girlfriend went to work at 1pm and he was ok. when i got in at 5pm there was two big piles of sick and water on the floor which must have been breakfast that i had fed him at least 9 hours earlier! i rang the vet who said to persevere for one more week and if it carries on, he will take a biopsy from hs stomach. its starting to get me down. the dog is fine in himself. i suggested to the vet about megaoesophagus but he said there was no evidence of a loose oesophagus on the x-ray (however he dd not do a barium). has anyone else had anything like this?
i could almost understand if it was happening everytime he was eating, but like i say it only happens intermmitantly (sp!!)
any ideas?

Hi Ian,

I would want to know why the wall of his stomach is thickened - there are a number of reasons why this could be the case and personally I'd want the specifics.   It may be an oesophogus problem or could be relating to an ongoing and undiagnosed food intolerance, excess acid, ulceration, pancreatitis, Addisons, EPI, IBD, tumour etc

An ultra sound (although more expensive) would have provided more indication of the greater picture, followed if necessary by biopsy of any areas / organs which appear abnormal.

Random, spaced out periods of vomitting and nausea (classically "air licking") with poorly or undigested food after several hours of feeding can be symptoms of several very serious disorders and your vet clearly has moved in the best direction so far - however I'd not want to be complacent and be inclined to press for the next course of action he recommends to commence.

best wishes, Teri :)

I've been having this problem with one of mine. She had endoscopy and biopsies done and they could only see her stomach was slightly inflamed. However, since I have took her off kibble, vet suggested prescription diet - I declined, and she has been fed nothing but raw she has been fine. even guzzling water like the others but without being sick this time :)
Don't know what to suggest, though food allergy was mentioned to me too, I decided to just feed raw and no kibble, and since then *touch wood* she hasn't been sick once.
