How do you get rid of the smell???!!!  Our cat Bob who is 15 sleeps on the stairs at night and has a litter tray on a landing half way up the stairs.  (we are unable to have a cat flap:rolleyes:).  MY OH puts tray and Bob out in the morning when he goes to work but when I got up this moring there was definitely an overpowering smell of cat urine from the landing/stairs/hallway:mad::mad:.  Bob has either decided to spray indoors or his litter tray isn't up to his standards!!!  BUT I cant find where exactly he has been (I have been on my hands and knees this morning smelling the carpet - much to my son's delight for horsey!!! :D How do I get rid of the smell?

It is actually making me feel really queasy.  I have all the doors/windows open and sprayed Oust around like its going out of fashion, used Shake-n-vac but nothing is working!!! :(

fraid to say i have not yet discovered any substance that will remove it....ours ped on bedroom carpet once & after weeks of trial & error with products "guaranteed to remove smell of cat urine" we cut piece out of carpet & threw t away!!! Ditto with a coat we left in stable & stable cat peed on it....20 washes later, smell still there....chucked it!

 arghhhhhhh!!!!   He sprayed up my ironing board once and I had to get a new one but as we live in married quarters I can't get rid of the carpets!!!! :D :D  It wouldn't be so bad if I could find whereabouts he had been but I can smell it wherever I am in the house and when I came through the front door after doing the school run, the stench was just too much!!! :D

If it's actually spraying, as opposed to the cat being kind of incontinent, or avoiding the tray, (probably doesn't like change at his age! ;) ) you could try the cat diffuser, I believe it's called "Feliway" which takes anxiety away. Cats usually spray due to not feeling happy so if you think this may be the reason, give it a go :)

It won't get rid of any smell but may help with the reason if it is spraying.

Other reason cat may be going there is because it does smell, in the way that dogs/puppies will go to that spot.

Looking forward to someone giving you an answer. Our neighbours cat marks our front door. The whole front of the house absolutely reeks. I can't exactly take my front door off and it's not my cat so I'm at a loss here. The smell is horrible isn't it.

YOu can buy a cat deterrent which keeps cats away... :)
- By kerrib Date 19.06.06 14:58 UTC
LOL - I have to admit I am not a cat lover and never have been but Bob was the love of my OH's life before we met so have no choice on the deterrent matter!!! :D :D  After eating my OH used to put his plate on the floor and let Bob lick it clean before putting it back in the cupboard.  And before anyone asks, no he never used to wash them  !  So Yes this did change the day I moved in and several other little things like sharing the bed etc.

Unfortunately Bob has always been lazy, whenever and wherever he choses and has done it before on top of a pile of recently washed clothes but this time I can't trace where it is which is making the smell worse!

maybe you could teach the dogs to track cat wee!?!? :-D a new kind of sniffer dog..
- By Lori Date 19.06.06 14:59 UTC
Have you found one that works Lindsay? I've used Silent Roar and that worked great but that was before I had dog boy the wonder hoover. I suspect lion poo would be considered quite tasty and I'd have to try to wrestle him past the front step every time we went out.

My cat got shut into the utility room and because the dogs were in there couldn't get on the floor so stayed on the worksurface and when she needed to pee, she dug through the top of the worksurface exposing the chipboard and peed there!  I had to get a new worksurface as the stink was awful and couldn't be removed.

Gross ....

ODORKILL

This product is really good, it's used in catteries and my cousin has just used it to get rid of the smell in the house she was renting to a couple.  They seemed really nice but left the place in an awful mess and the smell of cat urine (after a year  ) made it difficult to actually go in the house    they got people in the clean the carpets and then sprayed everywhere with ODORKILL, it's done the trick there :D :D :D

Forgot to say, you have to scroll to the bottom of the page ;)

Thanks for that Dill. Sounds much better than installing anti-graffiti devices on my front step (might be handy for salesmen though..)

Lori,

I had this problem with nextdoors' cat :(  he used to spray on the window reveals and the main air brick (foot square insect-proof ;) ) is just under there too  the pong was horrendous   so I watched for a few days to get an idea of his schedule (cats are creatures of habit ;) ) and worked out when he was most likely to do it (in his case 6.05 am when he was let out  )     Once I had the knowledge it was a simple matter of parking a bucket of cold water on the inside windowsill on the floor above :D :D   I was waiting for him and he got the whole lot just as he was starting to spray (mad evil grins here)  he got that treatment 2 days running and never sprayed there again :D :D  his owner wasn't best pleased tho, but I told her it was better than chucking stones at him ;)

any way you could try this?  maybe rig a hose pipe ready to spray where he goes ?   As long as he can't see you he'll take the hint ;)   then you just have to get rid of the pong :)

biological washing powder is good for breaking down the enzymes, but it has to be biological.
- By Dill [gb] Date 21.06.06 13:08 UTC
Strangely, biological washing powder will work on fresh cat wee before it's dried, but not once it's dried.  The stuff seems to gain in pungence too as time goes on   and there's definately a different quality to the substance which a tom cat sprays

Well funny you should ask Dill. Many years ago I had problems with a cat and I did the same thing. I just don't have the time to hang around outside the house now. Plus the cats run off if you come near the door. I can't see how the owner would be upset by that. For goodness sake, it's not like a little water is going to hurt it. I think it's very rude to let your animal pee all over someones house! I don't let my dog mark anyone's house.

Simple Solution. Pets At Home sell it. Could not live without it! Gets rid of everything. I use it when cleaning the litter trays as well.

When you can't find an actual spot it usually means it's spray as that will be smaller amounts -check curtains and the like.
