Topic Dog Boards / Health / Spleen tumour

After suffering a stroke at the beginning of March, which he has recovered from, Charlie, my old Goldie (13yrs and 8 mths) was poorly last night and refused food, a first ever, then in the early hours he was sick repeatedly. I took him to the vets this morning and following blood tests and x-rays it was found he had a massive spleen tumour. At his age I was wary of putting him through surgery but the vets have said because he is so physically fit he would stand a good chance as long as it hasn't spread. I have just heard from them that he is on the operating table now and things are looking promising so fingers (and paws) crossed here - it is so odd without him, even with the other four.

Ahh, I hope that he recovers well from his operation!

Well he has come through the op. and is now minus a spleen. The tumour was the size of a small grapefruit and had caused part of the spleen to rupture which is why he went downhill so rapidly. The vet says he stands a good chance of making a full recovery but the next 24 hours are crucial. Hopefully I will be able to pick him up tomorrow if he has a good night.

Keeping all our paw and fingers crossed for Charlie. I hope he's home soon.

Hope Charlie is well very soon.

I had a similar experience  4 years ago and one of my girls had to have the same operation for a tumour of similar size. There were small areas of spread that were removed  and although it took a little while for her to bounce right back she is doing fine now.

Hope Charlie does ok. Our Rott had her spleen and associated tumor removed in November and is doing fine, she was 12 couple of weeks ago.]

He had a good night and ate some breakfast. The vet said he was looking bright and chirpy (very different to yesterday) so I am picking him up at 10.30 this morning.

Thanks for your good wishes

Thinking of you, and hoping all will be well :) My old girl had to have her spleen removed when she suffered a torsion, and she recovered well, didnt miss it, and lived a good full and normal life from 8 (when it happened) to 11 yrs and 7 mths, when we had to assist her over the bridge with heart failure.

Oh I am so pleased he's on the mend!
Good luck and keep us posted with his progress.

He's home now and looks much brighter. How I'm going to keep him quiet with new windows being fitted today and next week I don't know!
