Topic Other Boards / Foo / When is a to not a too
- By Tricolours [gb] Date 14.06.06 07:15 UTC
When writing a letter in what content do you right to and too. Anyone know, all replies welcome.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 07:21 UTC
The word 'too' is used when you mean 'as well', as in "Jane went for a walk to the beach and Peter went too." :)
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 14.06.06 07:32 UTC
'Too much' is also a too.

M.
- By ShaynLola Date 14.06.06 07:22 UTC
Too is used in the same context as 'also' or 'as well'
Eg, I am going for a walk, would you like to come too?

*oops, JG beat me to it*
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 07:25 UTC
Snap! :D
(And I cunningly snuck in 'to' as well! ;) :D )
- By Oldilocks [gb] Date 14.06.06 08:53 UTC
To know when to use 'to' or 'too' is sometimes too difficult without help too!!  :)  :)
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 14.06.06 09:39 UTC
Should I admit this?  I don't know when to say HAVE or OF because in Manchester a lot of people say ve like in it must've been like that :d :d

I'm a secretary too so it's a bit of a pain :d
- By Missie Date 14.06.06 09:48 UTC
:D :D SWD - we say 'must of'  or 'must've' but if I'm writing it I would say 'must have'  :D
- By Val [gb] Date 14.06.06 09:51 UTC
I don't think that it should ever be must of, should it?
- By Missie Date 14.06.06 10:07 UTC
surely you must of said it before? You must of surely?
Yep thats the way I say it - 'have' is the way I write it ;)

Ahh now ya know I just joshing ya huh??? lol :P :P :P
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 11:31 UTC
 'Must of'??!! No, never, never, never! It's always 'must have', which gets shortened in speech to 'must've', which sounds a bit like 'must of' ... but that's totally wrong! 'Must of' or 'could of' or 'should of' are never right.

*takes deep breaths to calm down*

Who spotted my bugbear? :D :D

I must confess that in any formal kind of address I'm quite pedantic about correct spelling/Grammar (hate to deal with business or 'professionals' who give off a 'lazy' air with bad grammar/spelling)
But on a forum such as this with often very informal chat or 'chit chat' I actually quite like to see from time to time phonetic spelling,a board can be impersonal at times with no body language clues, and so I love it when people use their regional dialects in their posts, it gives something of them.Maybe its the 'Johnny Foreigner' in me that makes me fascinated by this...but generally I think I just like the way it somehow makes things more personal on a computer screen.
Nowt,Nuffin,Nuffink,There aint',there aint owt, Nae anything wrong wi' that in my book :D
*Ducks the flying copy of 'Eats, shoots and leaves'* :D who threw that??.......JG!! :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 11:53 UTC
I think 'from time to time' says it all! ;) We can all manage that! :D
Can I have my book back, please?

>Maybe its the 'Johnny Foreigner' in me

I hope you mean that in its polite sense! :D
- By Teri Date 14.06.06 11:55 UTC
Rearly?  You rearly fink it sokay   :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 11:56 UTC
Tsk, Teri! Surely you mean 'reely'? :D
- By Teri Date 14.06.06 11:57 UTC
not oop norf  :P
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 12:00 UTC
That reminds me of an occasion in my last job (the crossword one) where I had to reject a clue from one writer who got stroppy about it, because 'oop north' where he lived 'could' did indeed sound like 'cud' (you know, what cows chew). But we couldn't have regional clues. :)
- By brak3n [gb] Date 15.06.06 10:09 UTC
 How do you say 'could' in a way that doesn't sound like 'cud'?!
- By Isabel Date 15.06.06 10:11 UTC
Stick your lips out in a southern sort of way
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 15.06.06 12:04 UTC
LOL! 'Could' has a long vowel-sound (more of an 'oo'), whereas 'cud' is a short vowel; like the difference between 'card' and 'cad'. :)
- By Teri Date 14.06.06 11:53 UTC
Passes JG valium and bottle of the blue stuff :D
- By helenRR [gb] Date 14.06.06 13:34 UTC
My Mum thinks that the word 'GOT' should be taken out of the dictionary  she says you can always find another (better!;-) ) word instead and that it is useless.

You think about it.....
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.06 13:37 UTC
She's right! It's a meaningless word which can always be omitted without losing sense. :) "I've got to go" can be "I have to go" (after all, 'have' is what the 've' part of I've is short for!) or, even better, "I must go".
- By helenRR [gb] Date 14.06.06 13:41 UTC
I know, when she first said it i thought she was mad, but as you think about it you can see the point (or not ;-) ) I still think about it now, about 10 years after she first mentioned it and try to not use it.

I will tell her later that you agreed, she will be so pleased :D
- By Tricolours [gb] Date 14.06.06 14:51 UTC
What have i started here? but thanks for all your replies.

- By jackyjat [gb] Date 15.06.06 07:34 UTC
Missie isn't that shudda wudda cudda?

I would love to have perfect grammar I suppose because I had a grammar school education!  Actually lots of the rules were ingrained into my education and you don't forget them.  Even in informal circumstances I find it hard to ignore the way I was taught to write and really struggle with txt speak.  I go pale when I read emails from my young son who seems to have developed a whole new language and way of writing of his own (although shared with his peers of course).

I know that everyone has different backgrounds, abilities and standards of education, etc but I do struggle with imperfections - especially my own.  I would love to go back to school and learn all those basics again because I would pay far more attention second time round.
- By Missie Date 15.06.06 16:10 UTC
Nope. Sorry I mean No :P
according to my CD its spelt correctly with an added 'a' :) by Beverley Knight :)
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 15.06.06 16:56 UTC
Ah! It might be if you were sending a txt!!  :-)
- By Missie Date 15.06.06 16:57 UTC
