Topic Dog Boards / Health / hydrotherapy pool / chlorine - does it dry out a dogs fur?
- By sallythecollie [gb] Date 13.06.06 16:36 UTC
Hi everyone
Has anyone taken their dogs to a hydrotherapy pool?  If so I was wondering if the chlorine made the fur dry?
xx

My boy didn't have any problem when he was going to hydrotherapy weekly and his fur/skin weren't affected at all. I think the chlorine levels are very low. He was rinsed before and after every session but wasn't shampoo'd unless we specifically asked for him to be.

My dogs go swimming almost daily, not hydrotherapy but our own pool & they haven`t had a prob with dry coats :)

Not all pools use chlorine. Magic's pool in Somerset uses a modern chlorine free natural substance.

I must ask at our pool if they'd consider using a natural product.  The owner is very keen on natural products but I don't know if she's thought of that one.

Our pool doesn't use chlorine either, but they also rinse the coat out with a hand-held shower head afterwards.

Nope, doesn't appear to affect the fur at all, strangely enough.  I too would have thought chlorine may have a drying effect.  Both mine have been going to hydro on a weekly basis for almost 2 years now.  They get a quick shampoo afterwards; coats are as good as ever.  And it is Chlorine they use.

I'd be more worried about the bleaching effect on dark coats.

My boy is jet black and it hasn't bleached his coat at all :)

The hydrotherapist's own black & white BC swims daily in the pool as he is recovering from hip surgery and his coat isn't bleached either.

My GR used to swim every week and we were advised by the people who ran the pool to shower and shampoo him after his swim at the pool to prevent dryness.   Sometimes we did, sometimes we didn't but he never seemed to have a problem.

MY GR has been going every week for 12 weeks with no problem. He's rinsed off with water only afterwards; no shampoo. (not advising against it, just describing our routine)

my wirey terrier has been going and no ill effects on the coat or skin..

2 of mine have been swimming weekly for over a year now with no problems with dryness. They're on barf too and I always get comments on how shiny their coats are =D
