Hello,
I was wondering if anyone on here lives in Liverpool.  My partner and I are going to be moving over from York later this summer.  Any advice on good places for dog walking, good pet shops, etc. would be most welcome as we don't know that part of the world very well.  We've put in an offer on a house in Aigburth, just 2 minutes walk from Sefton Park, so the daily dog walking routine should be OK, but any tips for further afield to keep a busy working cocker happy would be great.

Yes I live in the Liverpool area, the other side from Aigburth in Kirkby. I don't know that side of the city. We used to walk our Dachsies around Croxteth Park but there has been problems with thugs and them setting their dogs on livestock within the park, cats and small dogs like ours wouldn't stand a chance. So we go and visit the area on Crosby beach where the "Rusty men"  100 of them have been placed along the waters edge and disappear at high tide, it's called " ANOTHER PLACE" by Anthony Gormley, from a distance they look like umpteen folk standing looking out to sea, they are only there for 20 months.

Pm me if you want to know any more.

Thanks for the replies
RHODAP - Yikes, your local park sounds scary:eek:  I'm a bit apprehensive about the move as I'm not a fan of big cities.  The coast sounds like a bonus though - I'd heard about the Anthony Gormley installation, will have to check that out before it's removed.

Hi Rosemarie,
dont worry about moving to Liverpool I live in the south of the city in Allerton not far from Aigburth we have two massive parks Sefton and Calderstones of the two I prefer Calderstones which is great for walking the dogs both parks have lakes and childrens play areas. and a cafe.
They are partolled by police and wardens so dont worry about safety too much but of course in a big city you need to be observant but that goes with any town or city these days.
There is a lovely shopping area with cafes where you can sit outside and in the evening a few bars and Restaurants which I would recommend saves going into the City Centre if that isnt your thing, there is also a little pet shop the pet shop is own by a lady called Pat who is very friendly these are all situated on Allerton road ,Allerton.
There is also a pet shop in the Asda shopping mall in Hunts Cross, there is 3 large Tesco stores and two Asda's easy access to City Centre plus the new park and ride just newly opened on Mather Avenue ,Allerton.

If you have a car you have Southport Beach and the Squirrel Sanctuary half an hours drive away also as Rhodap said Crosby Beach . There is Delamere Forest which is about a 40min drive and Walton Hall park in Moore near Warrington which is lovely park with lots of walks and a canal ,distance wise this is also  around 40 mins away.
Then there is the wirral there is Ness gardens ,Parkgate etc etc...
The people are so friendly so dont worry!

Well that all I can think of at the moment !
anymore info just PM me keep in touch.

Thanks for that Starryeyes, that's really helpful.  It feels a bit strange buying our first house somewhere that we don't know at all!  I really liked the Allerton Road area when we visited at the weekend, thought it had a nice "village within a city" feel about it.  We have cars so will be able to get out to the coast and Delamere forest - sounds like Molly might just enjoy living in Liverpool, and it will be nice to have a local pet shop too.  Pets at Home have been responsible for all the smaller pet shops closing down here in York.

The Wirral is just a short journey through the Tunnels where you can visit New Brighton, Hoylake and West kirby beaches and numerous coastal and nature walks such as Thurstaston etc

I do like the idea of being so close to all these beaches.  Can you take dogs on them all year round?
- By STARRYEYES Date 13.06.06 09:06 UTC
Yes you can take dogs to Southport all year round there are a lot of dunes and a massive patrolled beach  not sure about West Kirby there maybe an area accessible for dogs during the summer period. Of course its not like a beach in Cornwall... LOL but great for picnic on the sand wouldnt go bathing thought...LOL

Is it work bringing you to Merseyside??....I'm born and bred here so anything I can help you with give me a buzz!

I wouldn't plan on swimming in the sea, but Molly is hard to keep out of water!  When we took her to Sefton Park at the weekend she managed to find the nastiest, smelliest bit of water in the park to jump into and we had the joy of sharing a baking hot hotel room with her that night.   The reason we're relocating is that my partner is starting a new job at Liverpool John Moores University.  I work at Warwick University, so will be getting the train down to Coventry a couple of times a week.  Not sure how I ended up being the one doing all the travelling.... Oh, yes - it was all to do with how best to organise dog care.  Funny how all our major decisions in life seem to revolve around their comfort and wellbeing...

We love our doggies so much thats why ?? LOL

Hope everything goes well for you.

Hiya Rosemarie, you know John Moores Uni used to be my old school:eek: It was known as Notra Dame High School & run by the nuns of that order, had their convent attached as well at the top of the building but don`t know if they`re still there now tho. :)
- By STARRYEYES Date 13.06.06 09:07 UTC

>>>I do like the idea of being so close to all these beaches.  Can you take dogs on them all year round? <<<<

Yes :cool:although in the summer they may get a bit busy but if you go early morning or late evening you often have the whole beach to yourself - bliss

I`m a Liverpool expat & all this talk about sefton park with the boating lake(is it still there), calderstones, New Brighton West kirby etc etc is making me homesick :(

Spent many a good time in all the places mentioned:cool::D Used to live next to wavertree park, aka *the mistery*, bottom of smithfield rd. Bus stop away from Allerton Rd, know all around there. Used to go down Aigburth rd sometimes as well. What about Woolton woods, any of you remember them oh & Greenbank but only went ther when pushed for time its only small :D

Don`t worry S/EYES, you`ll find the people lovely & friendly & great places for the dogs :D

oops sorry, not s/eyes its Rosemary

Ha Christine you mean smithdown Road *The Mystery* ha ha forgot about that one. The boating stage is still there but no boats they went years ago I live off Mather Avenue  do you remember Clarke's Gardens and Alton Towers they're still there (somewhere else for Rosemarie to take the dogs ) Greenbank is still there too with the lake it has swans on it but as you say its quite small but very popular with the students in the summer for sunbathing ...LOL Woolton Woods is still there too and popular with dog walkers.

Where are you living Now ??

Thurstaston beach is lovely but don't go in March on a cold day or you'll get blown away, I'm stilling trying to get warm :d  No have to say there are some lovely beaches in the Wirral/Liverpool area which is the closest for people like myself who live in Manchester.
- By Christine Date 13.06.06 19:42 UTC
Hiya yes sorry smithdown, what am I like:rolleyes::D. Yes remember them all, as I said spent many afternnons/ weekends with sandwiches n stuff, specially greenbank cos I used to work in the hospital round the corner, Lourdes, its still there?

My friend still lives behind woolies off allerton rd:D I live in Spain now, left l/pool in 1980 :eek: the times flown by, must`ve been enjoying myself :D:D

Theres a very popular pub that does sunday lunches off Mather, can`t remember the name now, but taken me mum a few times when I`ve been back :)

Where is Thurstaston, not heard of that one?

We do alot of walking along the Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath, looking at the water birds and wild life. Can also stop off at the Pubs along there with the dogs and have a drink outside in the better weather.

Lourdes is still there, I have been in twice in the last year and due again in August as I'm having my knee replaced...although it has now been sold(or in the process of being sold) and taken over by one of the named Private Hospital groups, not sure which one, no dout I'll find out next week at me appt!! I believe the Nuns are looking at other ways to comfort people! To be honest it's bigger and more busy than ever before but needing refurbishment and a bit of re-newing! I think it's too much for them really! Were you?are you a Nurse Christine?? I used to be a Nurse until '96, when I was attacked in A&E Redditch(I was a Nurse Practioner, loved it) and had to have 2 major Op's on my back. Miss it like mad still! All the best, Dawn

WOW Isn't it amazing how many of us live or used to live in Liverpool??!!!
- By Christine Date 15.06.06 07:27 UTC
What a small world N/D :D

No not a nurse a chef, but where will the nuns go if they sell it? The convent was attached, well right next door in the grounds. Sister Kaitrina was in charge of the kitchen, right little madam she was

Thats horrendous!! getting attacked:mad: :( must have been awful for you, hope your backs ok now :)

Where abouts in l/pool you living?

My OH had never been when I took him for a visit quite a while back & he kept saying to me, *who`s that?* I`d say I don`t know! & he`d say well why are they talking to you? He couldn`t get over how if you`re in a queue or waiting anywhere everyone just starts chatting, bout the weather, been waiting long, is next bus due, whole life stories & you only wanted a bag of sugar:eek::D:D:D
- By newfiedreams Date 15.06.06 10:10 UTC
HA HA>>>to be honest I think they need you back LOL Some meals were absolutely gorgeous and others dried up chops and stuff you couldn't eat!!! I don't know what the Nuns are going to do?? I'll find out more next week and will PM you to give you the goss!! I live in Croxteth, about half a mile from the Country Park...which is why I didn't answer the original post as I don't know much about South Liverpool. Here you find the salt of the earth and unfortuately the scum of the earth, living side by side. Scallies congregate in the Park in the afternoons and evenings with their Pitbull/Staffies and create mayhem and attack anything about...little doggies, cats, foxes they even killed a calf earlier this Spring:mad: Then you get the people that see me walking the Newfies on me scooter(I look a right sight 2 massive dogs and me in a disabled scooter!!! cause a lot of the traffic to slow down and stare lol) where if people haven't seen me about say 'where you been girl?? we thought something happened to you' LOL and this morning a great hairy ar*** bloke with the biggest Boxer I have ever seen in my life stepped out and stopped the traffic so I could cross into the Park!!! :D Great people hey?? Yeah I know what you mean about the life stories...I went to Aintree for an X-Ray a couple of weeks ago, sat waiting and I knew this blokes life story before I went in!!! :P :P :P Mad aint they!?? All the best, Dawn

>>>Some meals were absolutely gorgeous and others dried up chops and stuff you couldn't eat!!!<<<<

Oh I`m shocked:eek::eek::eek: when I was there standards were very high! Fresh top quality produce all cooked on the day, even the sandwiches for supper made late afternoon, cakes for afternoon tea made in morning of same day, cold puds tho made evening befor & put in fridges Spotless too, sister Kaitrina made sure everything was just so ;):D

You don`t know south & would you believe I don`t know Croxteth :D put me there & I`d be lost!!

Don`t matter whereabouts in L/pool you come from all got 1 thing in common, we`re all chatterboxes that`ll talk to anybody :D:D:D
