can anyone recommend a good training book on dogs? I have attended training classes but I have a poor memory and can't remember all the exercises we have done over the months. I'm better at having something structured written down that I can routinely go through - I'm looking for a book that has advanced exercises in it not just sit and down stuff.
I would highly recommend The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson.

Try Happy Dogs. Happy Winners by Angela White ISBN 1-899057-00-5 the title says it all

Thanks, I have the culture clash and its very good, I have copied out some of the exercise she recommends but I am looking for a book which is not mixed with chatty or theory based stuff but purely a structured training exercise book.

Take a notebook with you.
I always make notes during the class, then you can work through them during the week. Also good for when a problem arises later, it is easy to look back and take the exercise back to basics.

good idea but there isnt time to make notes, my trainer has a small class of about 4 dogs so we are not sitting for long and I have to keep my eye on the ball all the time as my dog is pure adolescent at the moment!

Make the notes at the end of the class then while it is fresh in your memory.
Failing that, I am with Moonmaidens suggestion, excellent book. I have also enjoyed Mary Ray's videos.
If you're into advanced obedience, you may find Morgan Spector's book "Clicker Training for Obedience" a good read; I found it fascinating but it's not for everyone :)
There's also the White book mentioned; what else? Competitive Obedience by Paddy Coughlan (not clicker, more traditional but good methods).

June H I am reading a book at the moment called Competitive Obedience A step by step guide by Paddy Coughlan. Very good at reminding us all what to do. I got mine from the library. isbn no:1-86054-272-7
Also if you go onto lancing canine obedience group they have a collection of help sheets for advanced stuff.
If they don't have what you are looking for ask and they will find one for you in amongst their collection.
