Our whippet gets loads of pus-filled spots on his tummy and armpits after running around in the grass. I know one solution is to walk him only on the lead until all the grass has died off at the end of the summer, but he's only young and would hate never being able to run free. Does anyone have any other suggestions? He's looking particularly sore and spotty today. There don't appear to be any grass seeds in any of the spots, but they are all filled with pus. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Your dog has an allergy. You would be very wise to keep him out of the long grass and only run him on cut grass. If the spots become infected he could end up with a very nasty infection. If you insist on risking him, then make sure you hose him down afterwards :)
Have you tried taking him to the vet? One of mine has various sensitivities and Malaseb shampoo, from the vet, seems to help.
Yep, my thought too, take him to the vet and find out what the problem is. Then you know what course of action to take. Good Luck :D
I have a pal whose dog was also allergic to grass and she was told that there was a remedy from Holland which had to be given by the vet over a year I think to de sensitise the dog to the grass. It did work, but can be costly if he isnt insured.,
Thanks everyone. It's as I suspected - lead walking only (we don't have mown/cut grass around here). By chance I met a lab owner yesterday who told me her dog had the same problem. He's on antihistamine but it has to be changed regularly and has limited affect. I'll have a chat with my vet and see what suggestions he has.
Might be worth asking your vet about giving Piriton tablets - I've found these very helpful for my goldie's summer eczema in the past.

one of my whippets occasionally has allergies to certain grasses , i keep her out long dry grass and give her piriton. That seems to work for her.
