hi, i have a 1yr 8 months dogue de bordeaux i walk him everyday but recently he's bin acting a bit strange. When walking him after a while he stops and just lies on the pavement and you cant pull him as he weights over 10 stone, i cant think of any other reason for him to just stop walking unless he thinks hes on the way home and wants to stay out.
You guys got any idea why my dog does this?

Is the weather warm in your area and are you walking him during the day? Dogs should not be exercised in the full heat of the day and ideally restricted to early mornings and late evenings at this time of year.
If you've not been exercising him in heat, have you considered that he may have pulled a muscle or strained himself for eg? l'd be inclined to have him vet checked to rule out a physical cause ....
regards, Teri

He may be in pain from arthritis or some other skeletal-related problem.
Try walking him on a different route - go the same distance that you normally do when he decides he's had enough. If he's fine and happy to keep walking then you know it's more likely some quirky idea he's had instead of a physical problem!

Phoebe (Great Dane) sits down if she's tired and refuses to go any further. She's just not the dog for long walks.
I agree with the others, either too hot to walk any further, over-walking, or he has a medical problem. I only walk my dog early morning 6am-7am and then a good country evening walk 7pm-9pm in this kind of weather and leave my girl to use the garden during the daytime, this weather is too much for most dogs.
If it continues, then a call at the vets would be beneficial and should check his hips/legs, feet and back for any probs.
I agree with the others and as HD is a big problem in the breed you may need to rule this out? Were the parents hipscored? I wouldn't have one of this breed unless parents and grand-parents at least were scored.

Hi there
I agree with the others too - my GR used to sit down when tired and he suffered with hip dysplasia. You say when you walk him after a while, maybe he could be overdoing it too, he is a large breed and still only very young!

Just looked at your old message. Did you ever find out what the lump was on his leg?

yea the vet said he was suffering from elbow hygroma because he used to sit on hard surfaces buts ok now. I had to put mats down so his elbows wernt always in contact with hard surfaces.
Thanks yoou lot for your posts!
Hi i agree with Teri, your dog could be in some kind of pain dogues are a heavy dog and i'd be inclined to get him checked buy your vet.
Sounds as if he has put on too much weight too soon for his joints. The standard for the breed says max 100lb although it can be a bit more. Try losing some of his weight and reducing his walk and then give him another short walk later. This will help the weight loss and still give him the exercise but in two goes. You could also give him cod liver oil for his joints.
