Can anyone recommend a good dog trainer in the herts area?  Our 9 month old is lovely but she has two bad habits that we are desperate to break.  She is not clean at night and also jumps up at the table and steals food.  We have tried all the methods suggested in books but to no avail and I now think we need a little expert help.  Thanks for any help.

Once a dog's learned that food on the table is accessible I've found the only way to stop the stealing is to keep the dog out of the room at mealtimes, and never leave food unattended. Prevention is easier than cure ...

I agree.  Stowing food out of reach is just second nature in our house as it would be with precious or dangerous objects in the home of a toddler.  You just can't expect either to have the same level of responsibility as a adult human.

We do now keep her out of the room but I was hoping that we could train her to be in with us and not jump up.  Maybe that's wishful thinking!

She's a 9 month so she's going to need consistant training from yourself and patience Teaching her a good strong down or "leave it" command would be a wise way to go in regards food and strictly no feeding from the table. In terms of her weeing overnight. Do you have a crate for her or restrict her to one room? The only thing you can do is go back to the beginning and be very consistant with the training. Go out with her to the garden and praise her when she's gone to the loo. It sounds like she's fine in the day, just the evening your having a problem with. Make sure she's fed early enough so she can have a few visits outside before bedtime. I do leave water down overnight but not a full bowl.  Just enough in case they need it.
All dogs are different. My bitch was and still is the cleanest dog I know. She's horrified if she's had an accident. My boy on the other is the dirtiest little monkey and it took me til 15 months before he was totally housetrained. With my boy I did have to get up in the night and let him out for a while then gradually left him longer and longer until he went through the entire night. This is a route you may have to go down for a little while.
Good luck and stick at it, she'll come right in the end.

Caroline, I would recommend this trainer:

Have to say, that for jumping up at counters/tables, I put baking trays sticking out over the sides of counters.  When dogs jump up, they bring the baking tray down with a crash.  You do have to keep baking trays out at all times, until the dog stops attempting it, then gradually push the baking trays in until they are totally on the side, when you remove them.  It can be a pain to have baking trays out everywhere.   I would also not use this method with sensitive breeds such as most collies or GSDs or a particularly sensitive dog of any other breed, or a dog which is already sound sensitive in any way.  It's the only piece of aversive training I would recommend in certain situations.

Regarding the food stealing, I have tried everythingwith one of mine, baking trays, double sided sticky tape, food coated in chilli paste/mustard, all to no avail.  If you have a food theif best thing is to learn to keep them out of the room.

Housetraining at night.  Try feeding at a different time, might need to be earlier, possibly even later.  If you feed twice a day give the larger meal in the morning and a light meal at night.

I don't know what breed you have, but crating of a night could be an option, very unlikely to soil their crate.

Thank you for your advice.  We already feed her by 4.30pm in an effort to try and keep her clean at night.  It works sometimes but not always and my OH can spend half an hour outside with her at 11pm to try and make her do a poo.

Mine learnt a lesson on not to steal food all by himself.............. he stole some extra hot chilli one day and has not done it since ;-)
