Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Could my bitch be having less than 3 pups
- By Chezza77 [gb] Date 03.06.06 09:09 UTC
Hi All

I was just reading the topics and noticed alot of people's bitches had a singleton pup. My question is, if they are having say only 1 or 2 do they actually look pregnant? I have a bitch who is due(if pregnant on 9th June). Before we mated her we couldn't get any weight on her, but since she has been mated, she won't stop eating, her teats are rather large and she has widened, but not round like a pregnant bitch, but she does look fat when lying down it all poggies out. When we took took her to the vet at about 4-5 weeks they thought they felt some puppies and I myself thought I felt 3 little golf balls. So I am wondering if she is pregnant or I am just wishful thinking. Any replies would be appriciated. Thanks.

It could be either way really.  I would have thought that you would be able to feel movement by now if she is in whelp.  One of my bitches once had a singleton pup, she did look fairly pregnant and I can remember being able to feel the pup move.  It was a real surprise that she only had one.

My friend has just had a litter from her Flatcoat.  She told me that the bitch wasn't getting very big, I went up for a visit.
As I know my friends dogs very well, I could see a real difference in the bitch, but to someone else she may have just looked like she'd put on a bit of weight.
If I didn't know how far long she was, I would have thought she was about 4 weeks.  She was 7 weeks gone at the time!!  She was eating for England, normally a very well behaved girl, she was stealing whenever she could, having 4 meals a day and it still wasn't enough!

She gave birth to 1 beautiful bitch puppy last week.  Mum and baby doing fine..

My FC bitch, however, was rather large when she had her litter. A scan confirmed she was def in whelp, but I wasn't interested in numbers, so we counted 3 and left it at that. She had 4 strong healthy pups.

Sometimes they confuse us, but what will be, will be.......

I bet what ever you get, they'll all be beautiful!!

My bitch had 3 pups & didn't look pregnant. I knew she was as I had her scanned. The give away was her teats. From around 6.5 weeks she was really baggy & looked like she was nursing a litter already!

Hi

Thanks for the reply, it is encouraging. As my bitch has always been thin, when I say thin I she would never eat to much and so you could always see her ribs. But now her body seems different, you can't see her ribs no more, she won't stop eating and she growls at whoever try's to nick her food, as before she was tiny and cery placid. She is now domonant and top dog. the vet thought she felt something and so did we, Her private bits do still look swollen. I am ready for a litter if she is pregnant, going to get her into her whelping box tonight with a heat lamp, newspaper and vet bedding. Whelping kit and weighing scales are on hand incase. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Again

I thought she wasn't due until the 9th June? Most bitches, well mine anyway, won't entertain the whelping box until they are actually in labour. I let mine go right until the first pup is born having the bitch wherever she wants to go as if they are not happy, they can actually stop straining. Once the waters have broke, I try to settle the bitch in the whelping box.

Let us know how she gets on.

Foggy has just one beautiful bitch pup as well- six weeks old now, and weaned.    Foggy looked big before she had her -her ribs had widened enormously (and haven't gone back yet!)

She was only ever scanned with one - I just couldn't believe the scan.

Any bitch suspected of having a singleton should never be allowed to go more than a day past the due date - things start to go wrong too easily

Four weeks ago now my friends girl had pups, we didn't think she was pregnant but she had five pups so you might be suprised, is your girl a large breed? it is hard to tell with the larger breeds:cool:

Hi All

Been watching her and I believe she is just having a Phanthom. Shame as she had two good matings, but I suppose it's not meant to be. I mated another of my bitches last week, but not holding out on her either, as she had a slip mating. What's the possibity of Pregnancy there?

Thanks All.

My girl is on day 26 she is showing all the signs of pregnancy I am having her scanned next week .
I hope she is in whelp as this was a slip mating also.

I had a bitch once who only had a slip mating & got 10 pups! Bitches don't have to tie to get pregnant.

Hi I am new here. My bitch is due in a couple of weeks and she got pregnant on the 21st day of her season. The scan says 5 puppies but she is quite large and 2 more weeks to go according to dates. Eating like a horse even though she is on the daily worming routine. Let you know what happens.

Chezza77, I know people who have had litters from just slip matings, so don't be too downhearted just yet :)

My friend's bitch had a singleton puppy from a slip mating last week, although the vet had said she'd missed again - good thing she didn't go to the show the previous day!! :-)
