Hi all

Hope you'll indulge me for a second as I don't often have something to shout about :)

This evening both Shay and Lola passed their Good Citizen Bronze award :) I am soooo proud of them as they are both erm, how shall I put this, challenging in the training stakes  but we are proof that perserverance an patience pay off in the end :)

Looking forward to tackling the silver now *gulp*

J :)

When you tried to put me off getting a newfie you said Lola was hard to train, and if Megan is anything to go by, I believed you, well it looks like you were wrong and there's hope for megan yet.
Well done to all three of you, silver on it's way.

Thanks everyone. i know it's not a huge deal but with Shay's background particularly, we are feeling very proud :)

Now Lynn, I didn't really say they were hard to train did I? Can't believe I would have said something like that when Lola is obviously such an angel.... :D Like Dawn (Newfiedreams ) says, patience (lots of it) and kindness are the key but I'm sure you're finding that out ;)

I kep telling Lola that she is supposed to be 'biddable' (and she can be, on occasions) but since the dreaded teens set in, training has been way more of a challenge :) A month ot two ago, a one minute stay (or longer) was no problem for her but now she seems to get bored after about 30 seconds and gets up and wanders off

It also doesn't help that Shay was written of as 'untrainable' (due to his breeding) in the last club we attended :( so wasn't attending classes for a long time until we found the club we now attend a few months ago. They said because he was half Chow, he'd never achieve any really level of obedience and would probably have 'temperament' issues :( He is certainly a very independent and strong-willed dog but that's partly what I love about him :) And he is extremely well behaved even if his recall is almost non-existent once he's outside  Besides, he is one of the sweetest, calmest, most gentle dogs I've ever met and has no trace of 'temperament issues'.

The trainers at this new club couldn't be more helpful or encouraging :) They were of the opinion that Shay and Lola were ready for the GC when they joined but as its a small club and had a lot of very new members at the time, we had to wait for more dogs to be ready so they could all take it together :)

The ironic thing is that the it was a trainer from the club that branded Shay 'untrainable' was the GC examiner last night!!! She obviously didn't remember him, though.

Hurray for Shay and Lola!!

And Hurray for their Mommy for never giving up on them!!! Super

I'm seeing some silver somewhere in your future. :-D

Maybe I should have PM'd you instead of answering to your post, as I did not mean for other people to think that Newfie's are really hard to train and that you seriously tried to talk me out of owning one.
Megan means the world to me, as I'm sure anyone else who has one will know that, as you could do nothing but love them.
With patience they can learn anything, I know.

Sorry Lynn

Don't worry, Lynn...no offence taken or harm done :) I was actually feeling a bit bad for giving you the 'worst case scenarios' and not the more enjoyable and joyous side of Newfie ownership ;) In fact, compared to Shay, Lola has been a dream to train but she does have her days when she just looks at you like you're giving the commands in a foreign language

Of couse, you have to love them for all their little faults and foibles....even when they eaten £60, eh Lynn?? :D
