Topic Dog Boards / Health / Drooling Cavy

We have a 2 year old Blenhiem cavy that has suddenly started to loose a lot of saliver when he is asleep. Nothing obvious when he is awake, and is otherwise fit and well.

I think they have teeth like rabbits that need to align properly to wear each other down.  If one becomes misaligned or damaged they don't do this and the teeth keep growing until they grow into the mouth or out of it.

It is easy enough to cut a Rabbits teeth with plier type nail clippers, so if 'Maloclusion' is your Cavies problem you should be able to do this once your vet shows you, as I doubt Guinea Pigs teeth are much harder.

It could be a mouth abscess or a foreign body causing the salivation.

Argh!! I may be wrong....but I think the term "cavy" means a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ,Brainless!
I don't think OP really wants to do DIY dentals on her dog!

One of my cavaliers used to drool when she was asleep...because she had a missing front tooth...could that be why yours is drooling?

Sami, 'Cavy' is the proper name for 'guinea pig' ... ;)

Hi
yes, I know....but the person who was asking about the drooling was asking about a cavalier surely?
And the reply about clipping it's teeth was about a guinea pig...I would hate the OP to try DIY grinding down the teeth of a dog!

This is why it's best to use correct names and avoid confusion!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.05.06 16:03 UTC
Duh, should have thought they might mena a dog, b8t of course colours and patterns often have the smae names (and often don't) in various species of livestock :D

Well for what's it worth I thought Guinea Pig too when I saw Cavy. It's pronounced differently anyway, the shortening of Cavalier would probably be spelt Cavvy. (?) The Blenheim gave it away though LOL.  The confusion would have been total if it had said Dalmatian Cavy ROFL!!

Funny thing was, when we had our first Blenheim cavalier, we also had a guinea pig which was the same colour...! He was a "Blenheim" cavy indeed!
Hope we haven't confused the OP too much!

LOL the shortened name for a Cavalier is Cav A Cavvy is a string as in a string of horses :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.05.06 18:44 UTC
Oh dear the OP must think us a barmy lot, so if your still reading I would have a Vet look at him and see if he has any problms with hsi teeth, a tooth abscess or a salivary gland infection :D
- By Moonmaiden Date 29.05.06 18:51 UTC
ROFLMAO @ Barbara not OP

definitely a vet check could just be a bad tooth or similar

 Sam the Cavy (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) has now stopped drooling, probably the thought of having his teeth pulled.  Why the confusion?  After all it is a DOGS forum!!

Ah but we often discuss other animals too :D  Been several threads on Rabbits and horses etc.
