Rolos recall is getting better until there is another dog that i havnt seen before him.As a result he was attacked by a dog this morning,do I keep him on leash but he will never get any better if i do this.I shout his name and shout stay which he does for a second then he is off.
Any suggestion would be appreciated
Gill
I always put my pup on a lead when I spotted another dog in the distance (before she does!!), but I also thought that it won't teach her to come back to me as such. So I bought a long line (a thin 10 meter long rope without a loop at the end, so the dog can trail it behind it) and when I see a dog (or other interesting things like cyclists, joggers or any other people for that matter) I grab the end of the line, call her to me and produce a toy. In case she decides to ignore me, she can't run off. I do that now as long as it is necessary, which means, as long as it takes for her to know "come" means always come and not just when she thinks. It is important to be able to enforce a command once you have given it and the long line makes it possible.
thanks for that i have a long line might try that one
thanks Gill

Take loads of treats with you to the park proper sausages something with a smell and very tasty.
The long line is a good idea because you can stand on it call him to you continually lots of treats and praise then give a release signal I use 'go play' also practice puppy recall (running backwards with the dog infront of you ) stop then treat stop then treat.
Also practice in the house I call my dogs to me when they are in the garden or lying in thier beds continually throughout the day give a treat then release .
Long lines are good for training; however never use one unless it is attached to a harness - and definitely never a headcollar type piece of equipment. I know someone whose rottie had a severe back and neck problem due to accidental misuse of a long line whilst not on a harness...
Have you checked out the posts on here on Recall, too? :)

We used to have to grab tyler as well if there was another dog in the distance or he was off like a shot. He has calmed down now and if they are in the distance he can ignore the temptation, however if they are close by he cannot. He has learnt to stay where he is now when he spots another dog, so we can find out if they are friendly or not. This works for us as recall is not his best!!
